Sir Geoff Boycott

He's a terrible terrible pundit.

Come on Johnners, I know you know your cricket, how can you say something like that? The bloke is marmite, I get that, but there’s nobody in world cricket who can dissect a batsman’s technique in such a way that he can.

His memory and his anecdotes alone are worthy of a place on TMS but when he talks about cricket, it is ALWAYS worth listening to and you absolutely do NOT get that with all the commentators on TMS nowadays. In fact, the quality of that show is dying very quickly and it’s very worrying.

My biggest gripe with TMS is pundits sitting in for about 20 minute stints at a time. Absolutely nee momentum before they're off somewhere else.

It's a microcosm of the world at large really. Toxic wokery. BBC is certainly at the heart of it. Diversity and quotas over ability. South African cricket is no different. When you pick people to tick boxes rather than on talent, you go downhill fast. As we've seen elsewhere with the BBC.

For those who don't like Boycott, that's fine. Maybe next time it'll be Aggers that goes in favour of someone who ticks lots of boxes like Ebony Rainford-Brent. Or maybe they'll manage to find a blind, trans, Asian cricketer. It's absurd and some will only see it when it goes to that extreme.

Because he just says the same thing over and over again. The definition of a pundit who thinks he was better in his day.

I dont like him and think he's a terrible pundit with no insight, sorry mate, just my view.

A marmite character but the GLY is a big miss for me. People may not always agree with him but he's got an incredible knowledge and thirst for the game.

He's 81 this year and was never going to go on forever, and it made sense to protect him during a pandemic as he'll have been considered extremely vulnerable I'd have thought. It would be a shame if this was the end of him appearing as a summariser but that appears to be the case. COVID was probably the main driver if we are honest, he does not fit the bill of the modern BBC sports pundit.
That last sentence sums it up. To be a BBC employee nowadays you must be of some ethnic minority. Black, gay, female, etc., unfortunately he doesn’t fit the bill and will be replaced by a female player who knows as much about men’s cricket as you or I.

You’re entitled to your view, but to say he has no insight or that he says the same thing over and over is f*cking batshit crazy like.

Perhaps your hatred for him is clouding your judgement.

Sorry and all that.

Its not, its the same thing every time, his back tracking on Stokes innings perfect example.

Absolutely nailed it here pal. I’d rather hear from a county cricketer who has faced top class bowling and knows the pressure of playing at that level. Too many box tickers at the BBC.

I'm with The Rat on this one, Boycott is an absolute dinosaur. Don't get me wrong, when he actually talks batting, he's fascinating. But he spends 90% of his time on air bigging himself up and baselessly slagging everyone else off!

Getting him retired is no bad thing, anymore than being "woke" or "inclusive" is.

Jesus Christ. They throw you in jail for being English too, innit?

Look @scaly_piscine I’ve read your posts when you stick to cricket and it’s clear you know your stuff, I believe politics from all sides should for the most part be left off the cricket board, unless there’s a direct cricketing angle like the Yorkshire allegations, so I’ll just leave it at that

A brilliant pundit, controversial at times but far more interesting than the vast majority.
it’s the same as soccer Saturday, it’s shit now, equality over quantity is the craic now

The current format of TMS doesn't help, mind. Every 20 minutes you get "and it's a change in the commentary box", so there's little time to put the insight across that they used to be able to.

When the Australian fielders and keeper have been too loud and obnoxious, I've muted the tv and had Jim Maxwell on 5 Live Extra. ABC obviously allow commentators and pundits a lot more time for analysis and insight. Maxwell in particular is superb for asking the right questions or making a point to encourage conversation.

Boycott, and indeed everyone on TMS, suffered or suffer by comparison.
