Apparently learn to play as a kid hitting a tennis ball with a stump and had a non standard batting technique.

I often wonder about the great players who you hear had a unique style. Why aren't they imitated? Same as Jeff Thompson, he was as fast if not faster than anyone but no one as far as I know tried to copy his bowl like you're chucking the javelin style.
