i'm just thinking maybe they're called buttys for a reason, and since both words start with 'butt' can that really be a coincidence?

I’d go along with this. I can do a chip butty with no butter. It’s still a chip butty.
Though I did have a boss who referred to a sandwich as a butty, but I thought he was wrong at the time.

Personally I would classify a butty as a sandwich with a warm filling. Sausage, bacon or chips being the obvious choices. I wouldn't have any of them without butter but reading the comments it's seems I could be mistaken.

Very similar pastry - made with flour, yeast, butter & lard.

Exactly.
A lot of local colloquialisms on the go here.
Nobody outside of the North East would know what a stottie is for instance.
A balm/morning roll/scuffler for example would be local to other parts of the country.
