I’d go along with this. I can do a chip butty with no butter. It’s still a chip butty.Butty for hot food - chip butty, bacon butty etc.
Sandwich for cold fillings.

Personally I would classify a butty as a sandwich with a warm filling. Sausage, bacon or chips being the obvious choices. I wouldn't have any of them without butter but reading the comments it's seems I could be mistaken.Exactly
