Settle an argument

Butty for hot food - chip butty, bacon butty etc.

Sandwich for cold fillings.

Butter optional on both.
I’d go along with this. I can do a chip butty with no butter. It’s still a chip butty.
Though I did have a boss who referred to a sandwich as a butty, but I thought he was wrong at the time.

I have indeed aren’t they a bit like a croissant?
Very similar pastry - made with flour, yeast, butter & lard.
Very nice with butter and jam in them.
Surely if it’s in a stottie it’s a stottie. Like a ham and pease pudding stottie
Exactly.
A lot of local colloquialisms on the go here.
Nobody outside of the North East would know what a stottie is for instance.
A balm/morning roll/scuffler for example would be local to other parts of the country.
