Edit: nothing to do with the butter. If it is in bread, then it could be a butty or sarnie. If the filling is in a bread bun, it could be a bun or butty ( but not a sarnie)

I’d go along with this. I can do a chip butty with no butter. It’s still a chip butty.
Though I did have a boss who referred to a sandwich as a butty, but I thought he was wrong at the time.

Bloody hell, there's a very dsd story in that article. Must say back in the day the recording of incidents was remarkable. I use to look at old newspapers and it was just crammed with local news going in to great detail. Unlike today where half the articles are tittle tattle nonsense.

A bacon sarnie definitely benefits from a good slathering of butter.
