It hasn’t been ‘going well’ since about January 2001. It’s predominantly been a tidal wave of mediocrity and disaster since that period with the (very) occasional good day. And prior to 2001 it hadn’t been ‘going well’ since the mid 1950s.
Considering Sunderland have had three top half, top flight finishes, zero trophies and zero European appearances in approaching 50 years and a plethora of relegations and humiliations in that time period, our supporter retention is nothing short of remarkable. I don’t think there’s another club in Europe that could point to similar levels of support given the diet we’ve had.
