:( Great knock though. Especially as he's someone who is considered a bowler by the selectors. Is Sri Lanka A's bowling weak as piss or have we hit a rich vein of batting form in the Lions? Woakes, Plunkett, Taylor, Robson, Borthwick all had some very good scores.

Borthwick and Woakes are in a similar situation in that they are both good enough to play for England batting lower middle order but neither are good enough with the ball.

Looking at the Sri Lankan cards as well I'd guess the wickets are flat as a pancake.

Borthwick really needs to come on with his bowling this season. It's got to be close to the point where you say if he hasn't got the control now he's never going to get it. Compare him to that lad who debuted for Australia and there's a world of difference.

I disagree. 24 is still very young for a leggie and I would say he has 3 or 4 years before you could even think of writing his bowling off.

The problem is people think leggies, and think Warne. No leg spinner is likely to get anywhere near him in my lifetime and we need to give leggies a chance to develop without such weight on their shoulders.

The thing Borthwick needs IMO is overs. His batting is superb at the minute, but he is very unlikely to get the overs he needs playing at Durham. I find it very sad to say but if he wants to play international cricket he needs to play somewhere he will get more of a bowl.

that's not the problem the problem is he bowls at least 2 balls an over which either don't land or land half way down

But how do you think he can put that right without bowling more overs.

People say get to the nets but anyone who has netted regularly over the years will know that local leggies can look world beaters with a net around them, then go to pieces in a game. The only way he will improve is to play somewhere conducive to spin, where he will get overs in both innings of a game.

He's playing somewhere conducive to spin right now, he bowled 4 overs, Kerrigan bowled 30+. Collingwood, Cook and now Woakes have no faith in his bowling. I'm not saying he should be written off but he's been in and around Durham's team for a few years now and I don't see that his bowling's improved since he made his debut. And that's the worry. I hope I'm worrying about nothing because I love watching leg spin bowling, I love local lads doing well and he seems to be a sound lad and a pretty good batsman.

Nice piece on leg spinning here
