Spenny 1sts thrashed Barton II. Our 2nds found themselves playing half of Cockerton 1sts (who had no game), masquerading as their 2nds and duly lost. A bit naughty from them.

Whats the rule for that in the Darlington District League? I'd be having a word.

Anyway...

Hunwick 2's took another big scalp by beating last years winners Ushaw Moor. They got 140 for 9 and declared and we knocked them off for only 2 down.

Unfortunately the 1sts had a harder game and got 193 for 9 and like us, Ushaw Moor knocked them off for the loss of 2 wickets.

Good performance with the bat for the 1st XI but the lads are learning quickly that the pro's are often the difference in this league so we'll have to scrap for every point possible.

Houghton found out that you need to hang on for draws and after years of playing win/lose cricket that takes some getting used to. Maybe, ahem, 1 or 2 of the more skilful 2nd teamers would do a better job in the 1sts! The D&DL doesn't seem to have a rule which excludes 1st teamers from playing 2nds League games which is a bit odd. Spoiled what would have been a tight game yesterday.

Houghton maybe attempted to bat out for draws on about three occasions in two seasons despite having plenty of players who had played Coast league or senior league cricket. It was either win or lose. Lose usually

i see northumberland were playing lincolnshire today in 2x t20 games.

first game lincolnshire hit 290-3 with one player scoring 162 off 55 balls

same player then hit 112 in the 2nd game off 45 balls.

Phil Mustard was playing for Northumberland he scored 105 off 48 balls in the 2nd game and 81 off 51 in the first game

Was it just too many didnt want to carry on? Have those lads gone to other clubs or dropped out of the game altogether?

Most have carried on at new clubs. One playing first team at Mainsforth, one back playing first team at Burnmoor, a few signed for Hunwick, though not sure if two of them have played this season yet, some playing firsts and seconds at Tudhoe. Others dotted about elsewhere.

It was too much of a battle to keep the club going on and off the park. Lads who were running the club also played and had young families and work commitments which were proving hard to juggle. The club asked the DCL if it could carry on with a first team for an interim period and the request was declined. There wasn't much of an appetite to return to the NEDL from a lot of the players and most decided on a fresh start elsewhere. Very sad but Houghton won't be the last

Sign of the times indeed. Eryholme (wherever that is) have conceded the game at our place today. Aching Trundler returns to being Ageing Trundler.
