He's literally the only source who'd be able to give a formal confirmation. The media can't just not report what Donald is telling them and assume he's lying. And Barnes can't include in his tweet who his source was, for obvious reasons. He was between a rock and a hard place and likely genuinely believed Donald.

And all that is IF it was Donald who told him.

And even then he still might be right.

Barnes confirmed he hadnā€™t spoken to sd since the interview several weeks back, so we know it wasnā€™t him directly. Not saying he didnā€™t brief someone else to be the source, but not him.

We all knew (or at least some of us pointed out that it was a possibility!) that he was being used. He knew it too, I'd imagine. People always talk about reporters 'just reporting' instead of trying to offer an opinion. It seems to me that's what he did. Donald is the real bad guy here,why are we shooting the messenger (who will then be reluctant to pass any news on in future perhaps?)

Serious question cos I donā€™t get it, how would Donald be ā€usingā€ him. Surely misinformation would be better than this? What possible benefit to sd comes from releasing news about non existent talks?

plus @prehab26 has confirmed talks, and heā€™s not getting that directly from sd?

just donā€™t buy it. My view is there is an interested party and the talks are ongoing, just imagine at the minute the warranties and undertakings potential in any dd and negotiation theyā€™ll be massive, plus all these layoffs and the claims issues, this isnā€™t a two minute deal.

Barnes failed to question SD on what is a serious allegation. As a journalist heā€™s a busted flush. Heā€™s only purpose is/was as useful idiot for the charlatans running SAFC.

Is he really a journalist though. He is described as a broadcast journalist on his bio, which also states he has been a butcher and a food manager for Sainburys. Hardly Max Hastings.

Yeah sorry I didn't say that he is being used, just said that all of us (including Barnes) knew that there was always a possibility that it could be bullshit and Donald using it to string along another preseason of inactivity.

I didn't say it was 100% bullshit, just that people are shooting the messenger before they even know if it's real or not, but even if it turns out to be bollocks, Barnes was still right to pass it on given the source was presumably Donald or as close to him as possible.

This. Never, ever been a source for news or owt. Does his bit on the radio but not a reporter. Jumped at his chance to be Donald's go to guy since the vacancy opened up. Started getting interviews etc with the man himself where he asked zero probing questions and failed to hold him to account whatsoever hence I dont trust a word he says by proxy.
