Just had a quick look on Stat Cat.The lads are wearing black shorts, so that makes it 1950's before Brown took over. Probably Blackpool, as Man Utd would have been a colour clash even then. Maybe 54/55. That was mid-September with a 51,500 crowd.

The previous season to your suggestion 53/54 was bigger at 60,998.
Oh absolutely it was.That was the pulling power of Stanley Matthews as much as anything else. They reckoned he could put at least 5,000 on the gate for any match he played in.
