SAFC Milk Cup Heroes Reunite For 40th Anniversary Celebration

Agree.

We had a chance to get a draw against Norwich from the spot. We barely had a chance of any note against Swindon. Totally outplayed.

We did very well to get to the final. Drew away against Palace and Notts Forest. Beat Spurs, Watford and Chelsea away.

Pity we didn't turn up at Wembley.
Yeah there was some real heroics on the way and it did generate real excitement. League as usual was disappointing with a full collapse after Wembley.

Was at the Spurs and Chelsea home games. Great occasions particularly Chelsea. Spurs dominated but Turner kept us in it.

I went to all the home games and down Chelsea and Wembley.

All my mates went to Watford but I'd just started my first proper job and I couldn't get time off.

We completely outplayed Chelsea at home, never gave them a sniff.

2 bus loads of us went down to Chelsea and we didn't get within half a mile of the ground. Turned away by the coppers, 'full'. Ken Bates the arsehole hadn't made it all ticket.

Got the train down from Newcastle leaving about midnight, which was a tad interesting back in the day , as all the drunks in Newcastle came to give us a send off.

Took over 8 hours to get to KX iirc , even went over Victoria viaduct on the way.

A weekend consigned to history fortunately.

Yeah got to Wembley but not any of away games. Just a massive disappointment ultimately. Remember the huge crowd first going in and thinking 'wow'. But not much other positive memories. It was a long journey back.

Few bricks through our coach window on way. Got into Wembley just as the teams came out for more misery. Coach broke down on way home near Leicester. Got home at 8:00 the next morning. Mind I did get the day off school.
Would have been more than a few if it hadn't been the friendly final! 😉

Disappointing performance not helped by West being left out and Elliott missing (suspended/injured?).
Deflected goal and I think Deehan was offside as per old rule at that time.
Four of us straight back in car after game and took Sheffield turn off M1 junction to get food only to be stopped within 100 yards by police car parked on overbridge and threatened with arrest if we didn’t go straight back on to motorway and back to north east which topped the day off.

Celebrate the run but not the Final. We were awful and Norwich weren't much better. At least in 1990 Swindon completely outplayed us. Those two Finals were just complete misery, as I expected us to be competitive if not win both games. Especially the Norwich game when we beat them 3-1 at Carrow Road the week before.
Said it a million times on here but I was down Norwich and we only played well first half. They got back to 2-1 and they had us penned in for pretty much the entire second half. In the last minute we broke away to score the clincher.

I think it made a lot of our fans thinking would be easy. For those of us at Norwich (about 800) we never thought it was going to be like that.

I was at Spurs Chelsea and then Wembley in the Norwich end.
they were friendly fans in the Norwich end, that's true.
After the match we went for a beer in the hotel next to Lords, Westmoreland, by chance the team were staying there, we saw the Lads traipse in devastated, had a few words with Len (but stopped short of "why the F#ck did you drop Westie?")

Best part of that day was our fans stopping back for the cup presentation and dominating proceedings with incredible backing…. What was it we were singing
No clubs fans would do that now
We were unequalled for blind loyalty back then.

The game at Chelsea in the second leg of semi was easily worst experience as a fan.

Dropping West was easily worst management decision of my life

Although it was the 1992 FA Cup Final that really ignited my love for SAFC the 1985 Milk Cup Final also helped too. I was not a fan, I was 9 at the time, so did't go to my first game until 1995 - 10 years later - but I vaguely remember the names. This is where former players start to become more clearer. Colin West. Barry Venison. Gary Bennett. Chris Turner. Nick Pickering. On Sunday's I used to have a kickaround with my dad where the all-weather pitch used to be in the corner of four lane ends. The corner of Moor Lane.

We were terrific in both semi final 2nd legs n '85 (Chelsea) and '90 (Newcastle) unfortunately Wembley was a bit much for us on both occasions.
At least we've put it right on one occasion since.

Why were you threatened with arrest?

Can anyone remember getting your voucher when entering Roker Park on the games before the final then at halftime they read out the lucky ones who got tickets ,think they were numbers or letters on the voucher, when mine was read out I was jumping all over Fulwell, think my ticket for the final was 5 quid, even though we got beat what a day that was

Came a couple of years too early for me. Was taken to all of the home matches in the cup run but far too young to be taken down to the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea. Too young to even remember much about the Chelsea home leg. If it had been a couple of years later, I'd have been alright and would have been at the away matches in that run as well.
