Under Denis Smith last time at this level we averaged 17.5k
Best crowd was 29k lowest 11.4k

Imagine 11k at the sol ... although the way it’s been going

In 1988 17,000 gave us the 15th best in the country. To bet 15th best nowadays you"d need 24,000.

The op was speculating at the size of our crowd should we get relegated again. This would leave us in the third tier of professional football in this country. The only time this has happened in comparatively recent history is the Dennis Smith season.

Whether that leaves us the 24th or 39th best supported team in England didn’t appear to be of interest to the op.

Our attendance isn’t determined by the popularity of the game nationally- it’s what Sunderland do that determines our crowds.

Thankfully we still live in an area where, to lots of people, football would have great appeal with or without sky and it’s hype.

Local economic performance also has a negligible effect - if the side are playing well people will find the money to go, end of
