It's almost like the ownership group realised his limitations.Surprised if he even signed him. If he did, he signed his own death note as he wasn't round for much longer.

When data goes too far imo
I think people can be a bit harsh on the Speakman transfer window criticism tbf. He had minimal money to spend and cast his net wide to bring in a variety of young players with potential. Yea he signed a fair few duds, but for pennies and the ones who did turn out to be absolute gems…. Well they more than made up for them with getting us to the premier league while building the clubs finances to fantastic levels. The gambles made on the likes of ba and hume sometimes paid off massively (Hume) or sometimes didn’t (ba). But no one can’t say that Speakman didn’t leave the club and team in a better position on leaving, than when he first took over.Don’t think we’re in a strong position to make that assessment if you’re a regular fan like me!
I don’t think data can automatically provide you with a cast iron star, but they can help to steer you on who might be worth a punt.
But for every Ballard, Hume, Bellingham and Mayenda - there is bound to be a couple of Rusyns. You kinda gotta take the rough with the smooth, don’t think it necessarily points to an over reliance on data.
Because that would be silly as where we are now he played a huge part in itI said best signing and could easily counter with eight duff ones but can't be arsed.
I think you are being kind to the Boro goalkeeper that day mind!Good luck to Rusyn, didn't work out here but wish him the best in the future and still remember the cracking goal for us at Boro a few years ago to draw us the game 1-1![]()
That ‘disastrous season of signings’ delivered us Jobe, Mayenda and Mundle.I think people can be a bit harsh on the Speakman transfer window criticism tbf. As for Rusyn, all the best lad, you always put in 100% on the pitch. The quality sadly just wasn’t there.
Im not entirely sure which data will have been followed tbh, and how accurately it was recorded in the division he was playing.
Given he played the majority out on the left iirc, to make him our main Striker target, just odd.

It was obvious immediately that he had no outstanding attributes, pace, skill etc maybe work rate but that should be a given anyway, very strange signing
My Perry summoning spell worked I seeOne of the things that frustrated me at the time was the instance of KS repeating that Sunderland didn't play with a traditional number nine and repeatedly signing players who could play accross the front line, rather than as a centre forward. despite the relative success of Stewart and Simms to a lesser extent when we'd had them a bit earlier.
of course Liverpool and City on occasions, even Arsenal may be able to operate in that manner for large periods with the quality they could attain, but we didn't have the relative quality coming in to operate in the same manner (outside of the Amad loan).
Thankfully the penny actually seemed to drop after a while that they had to maybe gamble less and pay a bit more.
As a collective for the first team at the time it was pretty shite tbf. A lot of promise and some punts, but absolutely nothing to address the shortages from the previous exits.
His ability to come second in a race or fight with a defender and then fall on his arse was a skill he had in abundance
Sometimes seemed tidy/sharp when fed the ball in and around the box but just wasn't quick or strong enough generally to get onto things.
Think he's kid's signing mind. No way he was responsible for his replacement.Like I've said before, Speakman's best signing was Gisholfi and for that we can be eternally grateful.
This is it. He didn’t really have much to play with that window by the looks of it. Only one that really worked out was Jobe.I think people can be a bit harsh on the Speakman transfer window criticism tbf.
