The comparison with the US is nonsensical - they are both vastly different cultures with different reasons behind them but yes, one reason the Russians are so paranoid a people who value hardness and strength is because historically they've had it geographically tough. There are other reasons of course such as their cultural relationship with their leaders (serfdom) and the generally harsh nature of their cultural history.

Strength for Russians is very much equated to being fearful of them.
