Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

It’s been interesting, watching the fall out from this one. I wonder how many that are upset with him being sold would be happy with us paying £12m for a striker who’s 27 years old, has made 13 appearances in a league above L1 standard, is in the last year of his contract, hasn’t played for 8-9 months, and is currently injured?
Southampton fans must be scratching their heads, when he can't get in the Scotland squad because of Che Adams your current player who your trying to get rid.

Not to mention he's behind a useless plank Lyndon Dykes and a penalty merchant in Lawrence Shankland. Even Ryan Christie who isn't even a striker gets in the squad as "striker" ahead of him.

All of this very accurate stuff aside, it’s clear the lad can cut it at this level and maybe higher. He’s a natural goal scorer.

It’s his injuries id be most concerned about aye. Not a good record and no reason to think it won’t happen again
I hear lots of people saying that he’s a natural goal scorer. His career to date is 1 in 3 in lower league football, is that really the record of a natural goal scorer?

I’d prefer him to stay as it’s less disruption, but there are several more important players that we need to keep hold off than him. Players with potential to be Premier League regulars.

To me every time I’ve seen him play, he’s a threat and makes goals look easy.

He’s had a really bad injury similar to Hudson Odoi. Bayern Munich were desperate to sign him and now he’s going to Notts Forest to fit on their bench.

My heart would love Stewart to stay but the reality is, the decision to cash in on him is the correct one.

Dunno who at the club managed to negotiate a £10m deal for him but they deserve a payrise.

Still hope he has a good career though, just a bit shite for both the player and club for how it ended. Neither at fault really.

We’d been negotiating with him way before he got injured.

When fit he’s clearly one of the best strikers in the league, it’s just a shame we weren’t prepared to make an exception to keep him as well as strengthening a promotion rival in the process.

Saying that I’m not so sure the latter applies now as I can’t see us getting anywhere near top 6 this year, not with how competitive the league is and how strong some of the other squads look.

Anyway, time to move on from Stewart.
The salient point here is "when fit". He's missed nearly a full calendar year of football.
Do many clubs offer long term injured players big pay rises?

You could also argue it was a purple patch and he might not do as well again.

Look at strikers that have been one season wonders over the years.

Selling him for twenty times of what we paid for him makes complete sense.

100% correct. Cracking bit of business to get so much especially for someone who's had 2 very serious injuries.

If I was the club I wouldn't be doing business with Ross Stewart's agent again. Seems like a greedy knacker who was desperate for a big pay day.

My best mate is a Southampton fan, he doesn’t understand why they are chasing away one 27 year old who has scored goals in PL, and throwing £12m in for another 27 who has only played a handful of Championship games. He thinks it’s all about balancing the books on wages.

I think that’s a weak argument to be honest. To me he’s looked the real deal when I’ve seen him play.

It’s his injuries that might be the thing that fucks him

Sad how it ended but we certainly got our monies worth.

It’s because they haven’t paid attention to him before. A fit Stewart is far better than Adams imo

Michu, Papiss Cisse looked like absolute world-class strikers at a higher level. Been more over the years in the prem.

Just look at a more recent example in Chuba Akpom at Boro first good season he's had in his career

I'm not even sure Stewart will start for Southampton anyway. So I think this will be a moot point. He's definitely gone for more money, he'd have been first choice here.

I understand what you mean. For the second half of the L1 season and the games he played last season then I agree. Before that patch, not so much. He was the “lanky jock” on here for a long time.

Who knows, maybe he’ll be like Quinny and get better and better with age. But it doesn’t often happen, and having a long term injury so quickly after returning from another longish lay off doesn’t look good.
