Running Thread 2026

Record number of Applications for the GNR this month apparently.

£75 now.

In five years i can see it being north of £80 if they continue to see this amount of interest.
That is appalling price to pay. I stopped donating to Brendan Foster many years ago. From memory the GNR started as a "fun run" to encourage families to exercise. Great that so much is raised for charity, shame it is no longer accessible for a lot of people. London Marathon is probably not a lot more expensive.

London was cheaper for me in 2025. Can’t remember the price. Disgusting innit
Anyone now looking at the charity entries?

Minimum fundraising targets seem a bit steep.
Red Sky normally the best like

No places with them. You have to have a ballot place to represent them.

All the rest seems to start at £350.

Unsuccessful in the Valencia Marathon ballot, waiting til April now for the Athens Marathon entry to open

No joy in the GNR ballot this time. Actually added the 10k and a top onto the bill as well, so a little bit surprised I never got in as it does tend to seem like the add-ons favour you being successful. Not overly fussed, though. Done it the last three years. That said, I’ll probably be a bit gutted come September.

Still struggling to get started back up. Weather has kept me on the treadmill which is horrible. Did a couple last week on it and it’s not really for me other than speed/ tempo stuff. Just need to get that first one outside back under my belt I think.

I’ve gotten in with them without a ballot place in the past couple of years like. No fundraising target neither. They must have changed their policies

Not a runner by any means, but managed to do the 'Couch to 5k' at the start of last year. Although still going to gym I've not really ran since summer. Then drunkenly on NYE agreed to run every day in January with my mate (minimum 3k). 13 days in and gradually worked up to 4k daily. Average of 5:50 /km and really getting into it. Going to increase the distance at the weekend and will culminate in a park run.

Good job! Increase distance and reduce pace, your body won’t be used to the volume.

Be living up to ya name in no time 😅

Aye he's a greedy fecker is Brendan - hear some pretty bad stories about his attitude. Promised myself I wouldn't go for the ballot this year after years of rejection, but couldn't help myself. Feels like it's just something you HAVE to tick off. Haven't had any emails through yet, so not looking hopeful.
Do a charity place with the foundation of light? I did it for them a couple of years ago
Email confirmation for GNR and 10k. I’m in, tick it off this year finally.
Ignore above then 😂

Looking for some advice - not much of a runner (at all) but have recently started to experience a lot of discomfort in my right foot when running. Tends to start with a bit of tightness in the calf, then down into the heel / ball of foot then full on numbness about 20 minutes in. Have tried loosening laces etc. Think my left foot is slightly bigger than the right as the right shoe tends to feel slightly too slack but it's the right foot that goes numb as if the pressure is too tight which seems odd. Had these shoes about a year but only started to experience this in the past couple of months, and only go short distances a couple of times a week so still in very good condition.

Anyone experienced similar? Or know anywhere in Sunderland where you can get measured properly?

How do people deal with a drop in motivation? Struggling to get back into a groove after Christmas and forcing myself out at the minute and not enjoying it very much!

For me the best way to deal with motivation is to book a race into the diary that is just close enough to get you worried about not being fit enough to hit your target time.

Yeah, that’s working to some degree - got Manchester marathon in April
