Rooney 2002 - 2005

Sure it can. If we win this world cup theres a chance kane wins the Balon D'or after the season hes had. And the last two euros have gone pretty well

Kane might win it anyway, regardless of whether England win the World Cup or not.

I really struggle to see England winning this World Cup mind. I think the chance for a major tournament win for the foreseeable future has been and blown.
When you see those numbers, it does look like Kane’s recent 3 seasons is the closest to competing with Rooney’s period in the OP.

Bobby Charlton winning the World Cup and Ballon d'Or from the 3 season period of 1966-1968 would like a word.

At club level during that time he also won the first division title and the European Cup, being part of the first English club to do so.

Assists weren't tracked, but he had 61 goals in 178 games across those 3 seasons, and was an attacking midfielder.

It's the best 3 season period by an English player of all-time and will never be beaten.

Youre still saying never be beaten. I still think its beaten if England win the world cup.

Obviously they may not.

But if they do thats German double, world cup and European championship final in 3 years. Best 3 years of goalscoring an english striker has done in the modern game. Hes been superb.

Even if England win the World Cup and Kane wins the Ballon d'Or, Charlton did the same and won the European Cup at club level on top for good measure.

His 3 years is still better than what Kane's would potentially be as a result.

Rooney in 2004 euros was unbelievable. The way he beasted the likes of Thuram and Desailly was something I've never seen before or since.

I hugely disagree. Getting to the final of the European championships and winning the world cup at international level is better than finishing 3rd and winning the world cup. When you add in the goalscoring at ridiculous levels it would be better. It obviously hasnt happened yet of course

No. Gascoigne was a wonderful player. Shearer scored 30 goals, in 3 successive years, in that period.
In fairness the pool of English players, who may come up to Rooney’s level, isn’t huge.

Shearer wasnt any better in those 3 years than at any other time in his career. History will show he scored lots of goals per season when playing for good sides challenging for the league. He only scored 17 in 60 appearances in the league 2004-2006 ( ie when you were werent )

Has there been an English player better than WazRo was during this period?
Kane coming close atm, early Owen perhaos, other than that: no.

Wayne was more magical than them too. More maverick, less clinically efficient.

Weve had a few defenders who have hit equivalent levels imo, but harder to compare. For example, imo Rio Ferdinand should have picked up the ballon d'or ahead of Ronaldo when United last won the Champions League. That team broke all the records defensively and shut out Messi and Barcelona for 180 minitues.

Rooney was an absolute monster. Different to any player I've ever watched.

Didn't know how good we had football in general 2006 - 2012 and the level of player week in week out in the Premier League specifically. Pound for pound theres less "world class" players these days.

You could argue no top team from 2010 is any stronger today than they were then. Bayern, maybe...
