I heard Simon Jordan berating Thorpe's wife on radio the other day. Painful listen. He was basically saying that the ECB had no duty of care for these players when they had retired. Essentially what more could they have done sort of thing.

Bullshit.

Graham Thorpe and Robin Smith have been let down by those in charge of our game.

Both mercurial talents for their country taken way to soon. Just because they had retired doesn't just absolve these corporations of their responsibilities.

They were happy to coin it in.off the backs of these players when they were in their pomp. Overseas tours probably fueling a lot of the mental problems they suffered from once they hung up their boots.

Why do so many international cricketers suffer mental health problems when playing or when they retire?

There’s an excellent book called Silence of the Heart by David Frith about cricket suicides. It’s quite old now but it explores some of these issues. Obviously because of the subject it’s quite a poignant read.

Lots of different reasons mate

Thorpey first suffered on tour when his first wife was having it away with some Tennis Coach

Marcus Trescothick was touring in India when his father in law fell off some ladders when he was helping out at his house.
He went on a massive guilt trip after that and wouldn’t step foot on a plane.
It’s great that he seems to have fully recovered now

Strange isn't it . It seems its never the bowlers that suffer , always the bats . Unless I've forgotten someone. RIP RS

Jack Iverson, the Australian spin bowler, committed suicide. There’s an excellent book by Gideon Haigh about him. He had quite an improbable career.
