RIP Steven Ward

Very sad news. A great cricketer competitor leading Horden through its prime.

Played under him at Silksworth towards the end of his career when I was about 15/16 coming through and without doubt the best captain I played under, some great memories of them years and some great craic with the likes of his Gary and Stu Wilson! He was a top top man and condolences to the family 😢

Fond memories of winter netting with him at Lowhills Road Sports Centre in the late 80s, a very skilled bowler and top fella. RIP.

Spent many a night watching that great Horden side, especially in the cup ties. They seemed to be playing every night of the week at one point.

When Steph played for Durham against Middlesex at Feetams when he had bus trip on from Yhoden hall school which was organised by Mr (Paul) Priestley who was a music teacher there and opened the batting for Thornaby in thr NYSD league. Being a second team cricketer at the time at Horden never got to play with him, he was undoubtedly a Horden legend, his dad was very well thought of by all at the club back then too. Seems strange looking back now but when we first started playing junior cricket about 1987 or so the likes of Steph, Penna, Stuey Wilson, Parry, Spanner etc seemed like mythical gods and if they said 'alright mate' to you, you were a bit star struck ha
