How good was the fella, remember watching a bit if him growing up and seemed the type of bowler who could swing it all over the shop. Remember one tour over here when he seemed to take a load of wickets LBW

Any thoughts from our older posters?

As an Aussie I rated him a very good bowler - a bit like NZ's equivalanet of Dennis Liillee (after he stopped trying to bowl flat out)

Hadlee is probably far and away NZ's best ever quick bowler. Bowled with excellent control & guile at a good speed.

Unfortunately for him, most batsmen could just try to keep him out and score off the lesser bowlers at the other end. Lacked decent support bowlers through most of his career, but statistically was still up with the very best and was handy with the bat too.

I thought he was excellent and very under-rated, always seemed to be overshadowed by the likes of Botham but to me was a better bowler although obviously Botham was the better batter.
Hadlee was a very good all-rounder and could bat a fair bit but his bowling, once he started swinging it more, was tremendous.

He was an excellent bowler later in his career with superb control. I remember him having us and Gower in particular all over the place. Bowled a great off stump line moving it just enough to get edges or just enough to beat the bat on the inside edge for LBWs.

Great period of all rounders then, Botham, Hadlee, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Marshall.

I wouldnt really consider Marshall as a genuine all rounder but he was the best bowler of the lot. 90mph short agressive, unplayable stuff one day and then all of the skills of hadlee the next. A genius of a bowler.

never saw him bowl, not my era but you describe him like Mcgrath

Later in his career when I saw Hadlee a lot he bowled it fuller than McGrath did and probably swing was as much as a weapon as seam.

Earlier in his career he was a lot quicker and a lot shorter in length but i didnt see much of him then.
