In the early 90's my Girlfriend, soon to be Fiancée and then Wife and future ex-wife if Hayley McQueen comes calling, was going on at me about wanting to go to the games with me. After a few months I'd ran out of excuses so agreed to take her to the QPR (iirc) game. Arranged to meet her in Crowtree bus station and she turned up in heels so I told her I wouldn't take her in the Fulwell End wearing those - "you'll break your ankles when we score " being my expert advice so I went without her. The topic cropped up again later so I devised a plan......"I'll take you to a reserve game, and if you enjoy it we'll see about you going to the first team games" I offered. End of November against Aston Villa Reserves, main stand seats would be the setting. I'd arranged for us to meet some friends for a drink afterwards so we, especially 'her', were dressed more for sitting in a pub rather than at a match. True to form, as many will remember those autumnal evenings at Roker Park, it was blowing a gale and it was bastard freezing and the game was a shit 0-0 with nothing happening. At half time she said "I'm cold, do we have to stay for the second half ?" "Of course we do, I'll get you a cup of tea to warm you up". I told her they were sold out when I got back ..... they weren't, but it was part of the plan. Throughout the second half she was asking to leave, even I was bored titless and absolutely f***ing freezing and so desperately wanted to leave myself but the plan was ongoing, "Don't be daft, it's a decent game and we might miss all the goals". Coming out of the ground she said "I don't know how you can get enjoyment from that, I'm never coming back here."
