Reserve games back in the day

Sounds quite grim, bit like what the "reserves" are now really. Nout like the days under reidy.
I used to go to the reserve games a lot under Reidy. We played mainly at New Ferens Park in front of 200 or so. There were about 2 or 3 games that got a big attendance at the Sol... dont be fooled into thinking that was the norm.

At Roker Park in the 70's reserve games were a free perk of being an ST holder, they were part of the numbered voucher book. We went to about 1 in 4 or 5 I reckon, often to see a new signing or key player returning from injury, but also if it was big opposition, or the Mags. There were maybe 400 there typically, all in the Main Stand, I remember how odd it seemed to hear player's shouting and every kick of the ball. echoing. Another oddity I remember was that our fans would applaud any worthy goal from the away team. (cue Hovis advert)

Was the same in 90s. Vouchers from back of ST book got you into games.. and everyone still applauded good play from the opposition

Remember the days we would get like 30,000+ for a reserve game? I seem to remember a game against Liverpool and I think proctor scored for us, and they fielded Mcmanaman. That's all I remember, random thought of the day!!
We were still in the Championship then. We got a canny crowd against Man U, about 26,000 iirc and the mancs were bragging saying it was because the fans wanted to see Man U. A week or so later we got an even bigger crowd against Liverpool  .

Those huge crowds there was a push to break a record, iirc one of them was free and another was a quid as only games that people paid into counted towards the highest crowd or something.

The Nunez one he out jumped gary pallister (I think) by a good foot to win a header everyone was just laughing their cocks off

Used to go to new ferrens Park. Approx 1000 attendances. Good standard of football.
That first season at the sol a standard reserve xi would be something like:
Zoetiber,
Makin, ord, Melville, Scott
Mullin, Thirlwell, rae, Smith
Dichio, bridges.
Needless to say we won the reserve league (pontins league?)

Used to go to reserve games at Roker Park when it was a proper league. Have childhood memories of Liverpool ressies playing and Jan Molby coming back from injury and basically running the entire game without leaving the centre circle.

I used to go to Ferens a lot

Richie Ryan, Michael Ingham, Ben Clarke,

Jeff Whitley was on trial and I was like, he’s a player him 😬

Used to love the new ferens days.

Jocky Scott  used to just constantly shout "SWATCH THE PLAY" like a drunk Scottish bloke

I remember the FA youth cup semi-final 2nd leg in 1982 against Man Utd in front of 16,000. We drew the first leg 0-0 at their place, but a couple of unknowns called Mark Hughes & Norman Whiteside ripped us to shreds. We lost 4-0, and 3 months later Whiteside was playing in the world cup.

Aye, I remember in his 1st game there he got the ball out near the left wing, a few yards into the opposition half & span & lashed it towards goal & hit the woodwork. We got him about half way between transfer windows after City gave him the boot so he could only play for the reserves for the rest of that season.
