Striker
You can say "we identified we needed X" for every signing we ever make.We identified that we needed to sign a striker, we signed 2, granted one didn’t work out.
We identified we needed depth in centre midfield, so we signed one.
We identified we needed depth on the right wing, so we signed one, aye he’s a waste of space but you can’t blame the club for his attitude.
We identified we needed cover for goalkeeper and signed one.
Only thing I’d have changed from the summer is a permanent CB, but the Mepham loan has been great, just a shame it’s only a loan. I’d have also added full back cover.
Also if you add to that, Le Bris clearly chose Le Fee given their history and the club backed him in a way that if we go up then he’s a permanent too because we wouldn’t have been able to afford him in this league. January was a shocking window on the whole though.
If the club did just want to cash in and were only in it for the money etc. then they would have accepted Brighton’s bid for Watson in January instead of accepting £3m less to hold onto him in the summer. Just because we haven’t spent massive sums of money like the parachute payment clubs, doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to back the manager.
Nobody is saying we should splash the cash equivalent to parachute payments but as I said before, signing backups and punts for the future is backing the manager in the very loosest sense of the term.
