If they were willing to pay they could have gone for numerous others in the 120+ days since Beale rather than an obscure French manager with no English league experience worth paying for

how did SAFC know he was available for nothing? I mean if he was under contract then SAFC must have appraoched his club assuming their would be a cost because there typially is when a manager is under contract..
So if I were the french club..when SAFC phone up and say "can we speak to your manager" I would be saying.."well yes subject to compensation of course"-even if I was previously going to sack the manager..I would swift change my mind and ask for compo on the basis that one should never give a sucker an even break..
