Couple of times I’ve went the other way. People called Alfie I’ve called Alfred, for example.

It’s such a nothing of a shortening.
For the sound it makes, it should be Stee.
Instead, it’s written like Steh. Like you’re about to say Steph.

I used to work with a Ste. A man with thousands of social media friends, but didn’t seem to really have any close friends. Wouldn’t put it past him to spaff on his own mirror.

I used to work with someone whose first name had nine letters and her surname had nineteen letters. Both names were shortened, to five and four letters. You'd be hard pressed to even pronounce the surname in full.

Some Indians have ridiculously long names like. They must spend an inordinate amount of time spelling them out.

I know a lass who has a kid aged around 11. I always thought his name was ‘Christian’ but since the ‘baby daddy’ is I think Hungarian they spell it ‘Kryzstjan’. That poor kid will be having to spell out his name for the rest of his life. His parents broke up and the dad has nowt to do with him now anyway which makes it seem even more mental!

It’s a Liverpool thing iirc. First time I heard it was when I introduced myself to a new neighbour when I lived near there. I’d never heard it before. So when he explained it was short for Steve… which was short for Steven, I told him I’d call him ‘St’ - which was short for Ste.

We didn’t interact much after that

When I was still in the world of work I used to have a weekly call with our Singapore office. The fashion then was for the locals to adopt a Western first name rather than expect us to learn how to pronounce their names.

I used to start my Thursdays having a pleasant chat with Fanny Chiu. Always made me grin. Her e-mail was Chiu.Fanny@**********.com

Happened to me about 35 years ago, long before we had easier comms systems as well. I was unaware of their adoption of a Western name so spent ages on a dreadful international connection, getting more & more miffed as the various people I spoke to insisted they'd never had anyone work for them called "Violet!"

Full valet, inside and out and machine polish £200 plus some super 12 month paint thing.

Use self checkouts. Far easier and the way forward. Scan and pack is the best invention ever

Worked with a lass called Karen, who insisted everyone call her Care-in.
I call her Karen. We didn't get on
