Basically saying what I have been saying, doing ok, but beating the likes of India, South Africa, Sri Lanka in their own back yard will prove wether Jimmy has proved me wrong.

To be the best you have to beat the best and that means beating sides in their own back yard.

Australia done, three to go....If we manage to do it I will take my hat off to Jimmy

So it's gone from we will never be number 1 in the world with Jimmy to we must beat every country away from home with him in the team.

Excellent moving of the goalposts once again.

it works both ways, india aren't going to beat us at our place.

dont disagree but Australia beat sides on their own turf that made them great

England are amongst the leading sides in the world in a poor era of test cricket, to make the next level and be feted they need to beat sides on their own patch

He says a lot of things to get a bite, but that's not one of them.

How many "world class" players that are playing at the moment will be around in say 3 years? Sachin will be gone, Ponting will be gone.

Only Steyn will be around.

Very poor time for Test Cricket. However, we've taken advantage of this by becoming a well drilled, disciplined side. You can only beat what's in front of you.

Indeed and thats why I look forward to seeing the side on foreign shores to see if we are the real deal. Whether you want to admit or not in SA we were outplayed in three tests.

i think we'll start to see a new lot of world class players in a few years

and we still drew the series.

if england had out played SA in 3 of 4 but drew the series youd be saying we werent able to finsih them off, when it really mattered jimmy went missing etc.boring.predictable.etc.

Thats absolute nonsense EB. The criteria was Aus away, then India at home and now its these 3 away. The two greatest cricketing teams on the planet ever - the fantastic Aussie team and the WI team of the 80s got no success in India and yet you set this as your latest criteria for Jimmy Anderson and the current England team.

In terms of Jimmy - he averages under 30 both home and away in a fair few test matches against India and has one of greatest players ever out more times that any other quick bowler in history. For someone who isnt good enough to be in the team thats some record.

I think we'll know more once we play SA. India have not shown that they are the best by any stretch so far. Seem totally overwhelmed by the conditions.

IMO England are probably the best in the world right now, England are in the ascendancy at the minute compared to India who are on a downard spiral and they have some very big shoes to fill.

I am making no further comment on this issue in line with NCB directive

What I find strange is that EB says South Africa are the best side in the world, yet they lost at home to a "poor" Australian side the last time they played them.

Very strange criteria to work out the world's best side.

In every sport, there are people who claim that whoever is the best in the world only does so well because they play in such a poor era.

They overlook the fact that the reason the others don't look so good is because the best keep beating them.

People tend to look back at their own favourite era and imagine there were scores of all time great teams or individuals playing in that era - there weren't.

Who were the great teams the great Australians were always beating? Or the great West Indies? Who were the dozens of greats Borg beat every year to win Wimbmedon, or Bristow at darts, Benn & Eubank in boxing, etc, etc.

There are no eras in any sport where all the competitors were greats, it's just nostalgia. The nature of greatness is you can only have one or two at a time.

That's basically a long winded way of saying you can only judge people or teams in the context of how they do in their own time, and Anderson and the England team are doing pretty well thank you very much.

Exactly. The great Aussie sides from the last 20 years beat some of the worst England cricket sides to ever grace a cricket pitch. Does that lessen their achievements?
