Random: Durham CCC stewards

Mackem DJ

Striker
Does anyone remember years ago there was a steward, older guy, who used to be an absolute nightmare. He’d spend his days bollocking paying spectators, arguing on, getting into verbals with kids, adults & colleagues over nowt etc? He was quite a known person IIRC and may have been mentioned on here before. deffoba 1970s strict headmaster type.

Just a random memory popped into my mind. I’m probably going back 15 years at the very least & suspect he is long gone from DCCC & probably this world.

It wasn't the head steward was it? John Handy? Big chap with grey hair

That was the name that came to my mind from the description. Once shouted at my son when he was younger for playing on the edge of the ground during a break in play like all kids do.

I was pleased when I heard he eventually got sacked.

Tales like this were ten a dozen iirc.

Anyone got any other stories? Must have been the same bloke. He was awful, saw him trying to intimidate loads of people and kids but I didnt realise he was head steward (!).

I actually attended a game at CLS with work with hospitality tickets when I was in my late teens. He objected to a few of us using the lifts in the towers and was screaming at us like a madman for “mucking on” when we should have used the stairs like everyone else etc.

When we asked what his issue was he actually squared up to my workmate  and on his way out followed him 300 yards out to his car glaring at him from 3 feet until he pulled away from the parking spots adjacent to chester le street park

Obviously as we were all with graft we didn’t want to rise to it & have the company shown in a bad light due because of aggro but it was all very surreal.

He used to come into the place where I worked in Stanley and tbh he was fine...must have been the uniform that sent him on a power trip.

Died aged 60 in 2017.

Grey hair and a tash.

Was there from the early doors.Always loved getting in the pictures for the after match presentations and interviews. Also opening the players gate onto the field.Heard from a reliable source that he was sacked after a few England players had stuff nicked from the changing rooms .

Useful player for South Moor and Consett in the TSL.

John Handy was crackers
Any stories? really unsavoury like, shocked he would have a role in hospitality when he clearly seemed to hate other people. Saw him umpteen times before and after my own run in where he was yelling at people. Screaming at kids, bollocking people for being somewhere they shouldn’t, being rude for no reason etc.

You've pretty much described him

Spent many an afternoon doing that. Your lad wasn’t one of them types who wore batting gloves for a tennis ball though was he?! ;)
