Rail Fares going up 4.9% in March

How can they justify this?
Can‘t run a bath let alone a transport service.

What can you do except don’t use it?
Roads already overcrowded and so much for getting people back onto public transport. Just an absolute piss take this is.

Just reading that Montpellier have made public transport free for residents

This is surely a great idea
Sounds good but it's not really free is it, as you'd just pay more in some form of tax, which we already do for the subsidises.

Discussion is probably needed on whether you should pay regardless if you use it as its a public need or if you should just be paying if/when you need to use it.

Slightly off subject but subsidising private companies doesn't really sit right with me, can't see why we should give a company money to then pay dividends.

Well obviously it’s not free. State schools aren’t free either

But it drives behaviours; that’s the intent

Anyone for the solution that is Socialism?

oh well ! ;)

Those wealthy owners aren't gonna lose their dividends to increase wages for staff so they just gonna ramp up the prices.

Rail fares are disgusting tbh, they need to be capped. Tbh the entire public transport system needs to be nationalised. Trains busses trams the lot.

Aye but state schools are seen (and rightly so) as essential.

Just giving even more money to private companies doesn't sit right with me. If it is essential enough to make it 'free' then it shouldn't be for profit.

Requires public ownership which we don’t have the money to do
Yes we do, how did we find it after WW2? surely if we could find it then, we can find it now. The equivalent amount of money is going into the wrong hands via proxy wars, shareholders, tax avoidance by the big corporations, individuals , and wasted because of poor decision making, HS2 , Michelle Mone etc. Its there, there just needs to be a desire to make the country better for its citizens, instead of always looking at what is on the bottom line ( profits). This country has been asset stripped since Thatcher. The rich have taken from the poor, the money the poor took from the rich after WW2. The rich elite had to do it, as the working class had fought 2 wars in the space of 25 years for the rich kernts. They were scared the peasants might revolt. Maybe it would take a WW3 to make them see sense yet again.

I wasn’t suggesting we reward shareholders
I know you weren't but to make trains and buses free to use as you suggested then we'd have to give money to private companies, these companies run for profit so in turn they pay dividends.

That is unless you mean the government should take control or start their own train and bus operators and make them all fully funded so free to use and we fully own then, in a perfect world I'd be 100% on board with that but it'll be in a pretty long queue of departments wanting that money.

I do mean that yes.

I generally believe that free markets are a good thing. Public transport is generally not where there is a monopoly position

I agree, the rail franchises could be removed or just not renewed so that would be easier yet still costly. Buses on the other hand would be harder and probably cost more, hopefully it's something one party looks at but I'd guess giving that money to NHS would be a bigger vote winner.

It's the same as most things now. If it's failing, just charge more for it with the promise that there'll be more investment to make it better. In reality there is just more failing, and next year we'll be asked to pay more. See rail, water, energy, dirty barsteward SNP tax etc etc
