When I played at Dawdon in the dim and distant past we had a West Indian called John Volney in the 60s and 70s. He was quick, very quick. He started off in the 2nd team at Vaux and bowled them out for 30. First match for the first team he bowled out Silksworth for 26 and took 6-0.

He had married a local lass. He was crackers mind and enjoyed his Guinness.

My dad played in the same Vaux side as John Volney. A character by all accounts!

I played with him at Dawdon. He turned up one Saturday when the 2nds were playing at home when he should have been at Ryhope with the 1st team. Asked him what he was doing up the Drive and he said there was no Guinness at Ryhope. Went into the bar and had a Guinness and went back to Ryhope.

Chris Matthews in his first spell over here in 1985 rapid. Gilchrist described him as the quickest bowler in Australian domestic cricket from 85-87. When he played for Whitburn a bit later he seemed to have more control but not quite as quick.
Aye Matthews when he played for Shildon, left armer, right arrogant bastard, which was a surprise

considering he was Australian.

And another shout for Steve Elsworthy from Bishop or Patterson Thompson of Whitburn? My 'stalwart' of a brother asked this one.

Fast as fuck Patto but all owa the shop and would bowl 20 NBs a game. Generally a canny lad altho things were strained vetween him and Geordie Borthwick by end if time at WCC. Won a few WI caps but came close to emvarrassing himself - sure cricinfo describe him as obe of worst WI test players ever. Helicopter pilot last time I heard

Fastest bowler I faced in local cricket was a lad called Colly Solomon who played for Ashington. Played against him in a cup tie at Eppleton. 1st bowler I've ever seen hurry Jimmy Adams. I tried to pull his 1st delivery to me and it hit me in the chest, Tony Birbeck screaming for me to run and I couldn't breathe. Looked down and I had 3 tits. Asked Jimmy after the game what do you call him. Jimmy's answer was SIR!!!
