dunno of you have considered this already @Roger but another site I use supports push bullet so when you get an alert on the site it pushes it to the pushbullet app and you get an alert on your phone. It's a free app and I'm sure the server side of it is free as well. May put extra strain on servers I'm not sure. Pretty good though.
