When you watch the start of 'Saving Private Ryan' it really hits home.
My mam tells me about hearing the news on the radio that day and the excitement when it was discussed in school. Was telling my daughter all about it this morning as it hadn't been mentioned in school, they usually do mind.

My dad went in on Gold Beach with 9th DLI , landed about 9.30 , second wave . Fortunately not one of the hottest beaches once the armour took the odd beach emplacement out by mid morning . Still hairy enough and the subsequent inland fighting in the Bocage was worse once the German armour arrived especially around Lingevres, Tilley .
You cant make comparisons in bravery but I'm always minded of the lads in the Duplex drive tanks , launched a mile out with only a canvas skirt to support them in 4ft swell. Swamp that and your drown in the tank , no survivors .

Their were men of there time . I was lucky enough to meet many who fought in the 2nd WW as I in mid 70s . The different words they’re used to describe foreigns would be viewed as ultra racist by many in today’s society . Also their had a very wide vocabulary to describe men whose sexual preferences their classed as perverted .
To me there were a great generation , who weren’t frightened to speak their mind .

My great grandad was part of the British parachute regiment 21 years old in n 1944 left home a 2 year old daughter who never got to know her dad a hero of mine I’ve never met but heard plenty of stories about.
