Prince Harry beats Mirror Group in phone hacking case

I’d normally agree but not this time, it’s chicken feed for Harry this.
He’s certainly got a vendetta against the press and quite rightly on this occasion.

It’s worth remembering other soap starts got pay outs also
140k of chicken feed - if you had a serious life changing injury you might not receive that in compensation. This thread does not give Piers Morgan the lickings of a dog but all these "celebs" claiming compensation to me smells like a Whitby trawler. Not one of them knew what was going on or enabled additional security on their phones ? Surely if you turned up somewhere and the press turned up or stories leaked you must have an inkling something is not quite right. The drug lot have encrypted burner phones but a possible future king of England every message was being read by the press. These celebs are almost desperate to have had their phones hacked to keep their own self importance. Just because soap stars had pay outs does not automatically mean Harry should be paid, the law doesn't work like that. I am not endorsing the phone hacking but while the post office workers innocently locked up and many still waiting for their day in court, this lot seem to have been looked after by the legal system.

To be fair , people like Gazza were really affected by this . Imagine thinking that people close to you were selling stories , it has to play with your mind .

Not saying he wasn't but this stopped being about getting justice and became just a compensation claim ages ago. Yesterday, a teacher that was killed by a cow in a negligence case, the firm was fined 100k and in London a millionaire given 140k seems we have values all wrong. The whole thing never seemed to be about justice just about the money. This place is all pitchforks and burning torches against the press and Piers Morgan. If what he is saying is not true then he should be dragged through the courts but he won't.

I totally agree with you on the amounts paid out which are ludicrous. It’s always been the same that civil claims for hurt feelings have always been huge compared to those for people who have actually suffered death and trauma . It’s crazy !!
I was just saying that some people , like Gazza , did actually suffer over this and it’s good that it’s being called out .
I actually can’t stand either of the two protagonists and wish they would both fuck off into obscurity .

This is true. This stopped being about justice when the media groups lied and destroyed huge amounts of evidence, and the government and police were supine and lacking in dealing with it (not least because they were complicit), and the many people whose privacy was abused by moralising tabloids who were criming on an industrial scale had almost nothing left to them other than civil actions like this.

Important not to forget that many people who were preyed upon weren't celebs, they were the families of murdered children, people in organisations the tabloids didn't like, husbands of wives dying of cancer.

I don't care which odious celebrity sticks it to the Mirror, Sun or Mail, as long as they get hit, over and over again. I'd love to see full-on prosecutions, especially the executives and editors like Morgan, but you're right, it probably won't happen. Meanwhile, people walking slowly in the road get six months in prison.

wtf, I have heard it all now.

Like to expand? Not condoning the phone hacking when this happened with say Millie Dowler case, that was terrible but Michael LeVell ("soap star" no idea) was given 30k for what was described as frivolous, yet had a journalist assaulted him he would have been lucky to see couple hundred quid in compensation. Who was looking after Prince Harry that they could not sort his phone out ? This default pin number issue was well known for a long time and people were still not doing anything.

Research it more, they had hackers breaking the pin number even when it was not the default one.

Are you suggesting celebs get burner phones and ditch them every week because of tabloids breaking the law?

Your point makes no sense at all.

All of the information about phones being hacked has been in the public domain for ages so why did people continue to use phones the way they did if they knew this could happen. The journalists prob lost interest in most of the hacked lot as has been pointed out most of it was as I said frivolous. You don't have to use burner phones but I have a work phone and a personal one. The only people who have my personal number are people who I trust. Hard to hack a phone if you dont have a number. Not suggesting celebs ditch their phone every week but in the case of Prince Harry if he was at risk say of one of his ex-girlfriends going to the press, then yes his security people should have been ditching his phone. Plenty of apps with end-to-end encryption to stop this happening. Some people did nothing to protect themselves but could plenty of effort in going to court to say they had been hacked.

1) the hacking was not trivial, they had experts doing it
2) not sure anybody was using end to end encrypted apps at that time
3) The tabloids should not be breaking the bloody law!
