Prime Xhaka vs Tonali?

Was talking to my mag mate on saturday and said I thought Xhaka would get into most teams in the league. He asked if I included Newcastle, I replied obviously. He then asked who would be left out for him, I said any of them, he'd be first choice. He wasn't having it like

Xhaka is a beast. Tonali is a f***ing pussy cat. Absolutely zero comparison between the 2. Not even in the same stratosphere the 2 of them. Tonali can only ever dream of becoming half the player xhaka is.

Xhaka is comfortably better than all 3 of Newcastle's midfield, even now at 33. In his prime no contest at all it would be like comparing a top 4 Premier league player with a Championship plodder.

Tonali is very good but Xhaka has been and continues to be better than Tonali.

When Xhaka was the same age as Tonali he had won domestic leagues abroad, twice won the FA Cup at Arsenal, played in 3 major tournaments with his country and was captain of one of the biggest clubs in England.

The fact Xhaka has gone to a side who were firm favourites to be relegated and dragged us by the scruff of the neck to where we are now at 32 (now 33 years of age) says it all.

Tonali wouldn't have had that impact, and that's before you even start comparing them at Xhaka's prime!
I’m hoping he’s going to unavailable when we play them, the best of their midfield imo

Different type of players for a start. Better than Tonali so far, after 25% of the season at Sunderland. Ok fair enough.
Prime Xhaka, for me, being his last season at Arsenal and first in Germany. At that time he was one of the best in Europe.

Careful on being so reliant on stats. Those stats will tell you, I assume, that Xhaka is better than almost every MF player in the league.
He is very good. Thats not a debate. He isn’t the best in the league though.

Very true far better players are bench warmers at the top 4 clubs, plus it’s what he contributes to your team is what counts.
Currently GX has been a great signing, perfect for the younger players around him.
Regardless how good they are compared to others doesn’t really matter, the biggest example of this is Dan Burn a very average player for most of his career
Was in his late 20’s with only 70 odd prem appearances then he joined you,
I bet you were all a bit underwhelmed with his signing but he has been brilliant since coming to you.

I see absolutely no reasons to think Xhaka is still not in his prime. He's covering the same amount of ground as 20 year old Noah Sadiki and they are both at the very top of the league stats for work rate.

I honestly don't think I could say I seen an occasion when I've thought, aye he would have maybe done better a few years back. He's immense now!

It has overall, But if the stats were divided by minutes played, alot of them would be much closer. However Xhaka is the better player, he was a mainstay in the Arsenal team, then an unbeaten Leverkusen team, and now he has got us at the top end of the table

So, Tonali gets the hook more often?
That helps him, you think?

Horses for courses, totally agree.
I said, at the time you were rumoured to be after Xhaka, he would be a tremendous signing and would strengthen most clubs in the division.
Burn was very decent in his latter year, or two, at Brighton as well, if memory serves me correctly.

Burnley this season Keith. I read it here. He was hopeless. Legs gone!

I don't give a shit. We need to stop giving a shit. This kind of pap ends up all over that deluded rtg shite.

Couldn't care less what happens to Tonali and at the same time I'm really enjoying watching having Xhaka in our team. He's perfect for us, regardless of if people think he's better or not.
This ^ magesque

It's still relatively early days like, but in terms of his influence on a game, I'd be inclined to agree.

I just think when it goes on passes attempted, tackles made etc, if they aren't on the pitch they cant make the tackles/passes. this could be down to injury, or squad rotation. A fair way to compare each of those stats is to base it on per 90mins or something similar

The stats are pretty similar using the ball apart from the most important ones.

Xhaka 1 goal, 3 assists, Tonali 0 and 1.

Passing similar. Tonali is better at dribbling and has no yellow cards.

Off the ball Xhaka is literally twice as good in most criteria. Duels won, headers won and tackles etc. It's not surprising he's picked up 3 bookings.

He's also a great captain and leader. Overall he's just a more complete player and midfielder. He's basically a Roy Keane compared to say a Gareth Barry.
