Is he staying?

I know that from next season Irish players will be no longer allowed to play in this country as homegrowns - but is he going to turn his back on international cricket and play as an Englishman? After all, he was born in this country.

If that isn’t the case, continuing to pay and play him this season is a truly horrific move by the club.

I think we have to assume he's staying given Richardson has been released.

Very average cricketer imo.

Far better lads havent been able to carve out a career at DCCC over the years.

From that article it looks like he will be staying put with Durham however. I cant see him being picked by an english countie as an “overseas player” as he suggests...

Aye, no better than Pringle who has been released.

Pringle, Poynter and Clark are/were much the same with the bat, with Poynter a touch behind in the averages although he does have 2 1st class centuries to his name. Pringle and Clarks 1st class batting record are virtually identical but Clark has a better record in 50 over cricket but only 1 100 and 2 50's.

Judged on batting alone you have to fear for the futures of Clark and Poynter.

However, Poynter is also a wickie, so that may change the balance in his favour especially since Richardson has left but perhaps the 2nd's/academy have one ready to step up.

Clark however has no other string to his bow, either his batting is good enough

Dunno why we didn't just keep Richardson and release the other two.

Surely if Bancroft was still at the club then he would have kept in the T20 just as he did in the RL cup? However we now have a direct replacement in Handscombe. So why isn't he stumping? Poynter doesn't even keep for Ireland FFS! Why is he captain for the T20? As it is now Poynter doesn't contribute with the bat so we're playing with 10 men in the T20.

1. Maybe Bancroft would have done but I don't think Poynter was available, I think that was the time he as away with Ireland, might be wrong though. Poynter is a good keeper I have no complaints with him in that role.
2. I don't know why he is captain of the T20 team, no one does outside the club but there must be a reason. At the very least what he does have is experience of T20 and he (obviously wanted to do the job when others didn't ie Lees).
3. You cannot seriously fault Poynter for his batting last night. He faced 1 ball, scored a run and was not out. Against Northants he faced 11 balls and scored 19 runs finishing not out while against Lancs (which we lost) he had a failure scoring 5 run off 7 balls but he was one poor inning in many in that match. - This claim Durham are playing with 10 men because of Poynter doesn't stack up.

.
Agree with you.
The stick Poynter has been receiving on here has been disgraceful.
1. He is the best keeper at the club. He is not the best batsman who can keep wicket.
2. He has experience of 20/20 cricket and it enables Eckersley to have a "rest", before the Championship starts up again.
3. The coaches pick the captain and they know the players better than any of the posters on here.
The so called "supporters" that post on here must know far more about cricket than the Coaches, REALLY !

My point is that if Handscombe kept wicket Poynter could be dropped and it would free up another place in the side for a specialist batsman (assuming we have another one) or give the opportunity to play one of the Academy lads. However as he is captain that is unlikely to happen. FWIW I think Eckersley is a better stumper than Poynter and definitely the superior batsman. But for some bizarre reason Eckersley isn't involved in white ball cricket. Same as Rushy. I was at the RLC home game against Derbyshire and Rushy was hanging around under the electronic scoreboard. A spectator went up to Rushy and asked him why he wasn't playing in the RLC after a bit conversation about injuries Rushy gave the reason in a loud voice as "Not Selected". To put it mildly he didn't seem too pleased about it.

It would be a great help if the Club actually gave out background information to the media, or even on its website, on why some decisions are made on captaincy, selection, contracts etc. Otherwise it just leads to endless speculation as to what is going on, as a lot of it, from the outside looking in, makes little sense.

I agree about poor communication from the club to supporters.....but...… just trust the Coaches. That is what they get paid for.

I would really like to trust the coaching staff. But when the best bowler at the Club doesn't play white ball cricket, and isn't happy about it, then it's extremely difficult to do so.

You have to trust the coaches to get it right for everybody, and the club. I would guess Chris Rushworth would want to play in every game. There is a massive 4 day game coming up on 18th August v Leicestershire. If we win this it will boost our chances of getting promoted. A fit and firing Rushworth will be vital to us winning that game.
I do not pretend to know the coaches' thinking on this but, to me, it makes sense ?
