Post War Average League Attendance Table

Sounds cruel, but having large attendances only matters if it makes a tangible difference to the club's income. We give loads away for free so don't really benefit from it.

A season ticket at the SoL is along the same price as a panini and coke at White Hart Lane.
Would people in this area be able to afford to pay more?

I wouldn't know what Mags care about. I don't go trawling their fan's sites.
Neither do I. Must be pretty sad doing that.. Ah well....

If they used a calculation system based on average attendance to success ratio we'd be top by miles.

A handful of challenges for the title in the late 40s & 50s, 1 FA Cup win, 1 European competition and plenty of seasons out of the top flight. :(

Nail on the head. Three top ten finishes in 5/6 decades or whatever it is. Phenomenal really, I know that. I try not to get into petty arguments about it like cos it makes me cringe.

Newcastle have fantastic attendances but they were in the right place at the right time. The sky football era was taking off and they had a couple of top 2 finishes and then a few European campaigns in the early to mid nighties. But I'm proud to say as a club we have nothing to be ashamed of the turn outs we get for the years of turd we've had served up.

Don't care what anyone says it us amazing we are that high. If you draw the line at say 1970 all the clubs above us have won the league more than once since then except Spurs (3 FA cups, 4 league cups, 2 UEFA cups) and Villa (only once but also a European Cup, 2 League cups). City have come good late, but were as big as anyone going into the 70s. And all the London clubs have always had tourists and floaters anyway.

Not forgetting the mags but they did have the Keegan years finishing runners up and breaking the world transfer record to get the best striker in the league, who also happened to be local, then the Robson years qualifying for Europe, etc.

Apart from '73 we've done fuck all and have spent most of that time under the media radar, we'd never be even mentioned alongside those clubs.

Or draw the line where the table does, 1945. Wasn't it the 50s where we got done for dodgy payments, first relegation and then it's been up and down since then, and 1973.

Arguments about free tickets and ticket prices need to factor in the prosperity of the local area in which unfortunately Sunderland doesn't sit highly.

It's impossible to go to the detail needed to produce a definitive table like this.

Sunderland has a great support and it's something I am proud of. But if I meet someone who follows Mansfield home and away I'm not gonna start gloating about the number of supporters we have compared to them....

Who's gloating? We have fantastic support in the light of our lack of success and it stands up well in comparison to the most successful clubs, end of. Don't know where the 'gloating' comes into that.

I'm as pro Sunderland as the next person but attendance wise there's no denying the North East overall has loyalty to be proud of.

That includes boro to an extent as to be fair they have us and the mags up the road and the steelwork closure means that they don't exactly have unlimited cash to spend on tickets and have been in the lower division for about 6 years or so.

Still a region to be proud of support wise- yes Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool etc have big clubs and big crowds however they also get regular success. The success in the north east is a disgrace considering the size of the clubs/fan bases etc.

I don't think any other region would get ours, the mags and boro's crowds if they go through the lack of silverware like we do and also to an extent the lack of economic fruition.

Edit: a prime example is Celtic being about 15k shy of a sell out last season in league games due to boredom despite being top of the league. If us, the mags or boro were top of the premier league, some fans would be sitting on the f***ing roof
