Outside shout of Jason Roy being in the squad? Maybe too early.

Averaging over 50 in the county championship this summer, and in incredible form in the one day forms of the game. If we are aiming to play more attacking cricket, he wouldn't be a bad shout?
He's in the Lions squad for the A games v Sri Lanka and New Zealand, be interesting to see how he and Hales perform. I look on him as being similar to Hales and you'd have to think Hales is in the box seat due to his performances in t20. Think it's ridiculous he's not played 50 over cricket yet.

Trott said he didn't have depression.
He did, but then he broke down again straight away. Whatever it is, it looks like he'll have a lot to do before he starts touring again.

Whether Trott has depression or not (and, to be clear, he has my sympathy if he has) its probably time to draw a line under his (excellent) England career. We are sometimes guilty of hanging on to past glories too long. We have to get the balance right between being deferential to experienced players and giving new players a chance.

Trott said he had 'burnout' which is a form of anxiety disorder - in his case related to confidence in his batting after having his vulnerability to the short ball exposed by the convicts last summer and (especially) in the winter. The way to treat anxiety is repeated exposure to the stimulus - this is exactly what Trott has been doing, and he has already started putting together some big scores for Warwickshire despite being peppered with short balls. It is my considered opinion the lad will be back to his best form by the winter. The question then is who, if anyone, you drop to accommodate a world class senior player pushing 35.

We are all talking like we are experts of what is going on his mind, we aren't. There are a lot of grey areas between depression and anxiety, it isn't a black or white thing where you either have it or you don't. The worries about his cricket could just be the icing on the cake of bigger problems he has. So people on this board who call him a bottler are bang out of order, they have no idea what he might of been doing through.

You make a good point, personally I think in Cricket we look long term too much, you have to take it series by series IMO. We have seen what has happened to the England team once they have started losing, sometimes you just have to stop the run and get a win. I 100% think Trott should be considered if he returns to the form he was in, it doesn't matter to me if its a long term solution, if he can help England win an Ashes series or a key test series, its worth it.

The idea of an inform Cook and Trott opening the Ashes in England would genuinely scare the Aussies, they got the better of them this winter, but they are two players that the Aussies genuinely respect and fear.

I do half agree with you, Prior should not of played this summer, I personally think the decision to move KP on was the right one as it allows the likes of Ballance and Root more responsibility, and they are relishing in it.

What I would say is, if the likes of Trott and Prior have a year or so, or more, in county cricket, and are constantly scoring 100s, then they have to be considered in squads. We know they can do it, and if we have an injury or something mid series, then why not bring in an international player. Cricket is slightly different to sports like football in this way, there are numerous players who come back in the later years. Brad Haddin is a prime example.

Quite. Good post.

Agree with everything you say Johnson, The main problem accommodating Trott is who you drop as nos 3-6 are not the problem. Robson is the weak link, so do you open the batting with Trott, Root or Ballance? Balance is averaging 60+ at number 3 and Root has looked more at home in the middle order. So Trott to open against the short pitched new ball?!

Yeah Trott to open, this may sound stupid but I don't think he has a problem with the short ball, he hasn't through his whole career until Australia. There were other issues going on there as we know about, and playing a 90mph short ball with a scrambled brain won't be easy. For me if he is scoring runs, and healthy, he may get a chance opening the batting with Cook at some point.

Ballance and Root should not be moved from 3 and 5 for a long long time IMO, I still find it mental that a few posters on here would move Ballance to 3 and open with Root!

trott looked happy and relaxed last night on the t20 match. popped up all over the place, laughing, chatting and carrying on. to be fair though, i think his england days have gone, similar to tresco and how he has gone

Trott has a desire to get back into the team I think, probably will never happen mind, shame as he is a hell of a player
