Points total

It's a cracking achievement for a newly promoted team, or just Sunderland in general by the look of things.

Also one quick question regarding our potential points total and going into hypotheticals now.

If we win our game on Sunday and manage to get lucky as well and finish 7th on 54 points, how would that rank in terms of lowest points totals to finish 7th in the league?

It must be quite low and possibly the lowest to finish top 7 in PL history.

It has taken 60 points plus to finish 7th in a lot of seasons. Forest got 65 last year (which is the highest in the 20 team prem era).

But most of the time it only takes a point total in the 50s. 55-62 are normally the points total needed.

Three previous teams have got 54 for 7th, Everton in 2010-11, Burnley in 17-18 and Liverpool in 1998-99.

Likewise three teams have got 7th with less points, 53 for all of Fulham in 2008-09 (The Roy Hodgson team that reached the final in the next year), Charlton in 2003-04 and West Ham in 2001-02.

So 54 is low but not like an outlier.

Amazing that we’ve got past the 50 points mark.

An incredible season with the cherry on the cake hopefully to come on Sunday.

If we get it right this summer and we get a bit of luck regarding teams not coming in for our players then there is no reason why we cannot build on this.

At times our squad has looked very thin. If we bring in 4-5 players who can instantly improve us with 2-3 players to beef the squad, top 8 has to be the target.

In a way. But also id be happy with 12th next year and being safe with a few games to spare. Second season catches a lot of teams out

Got 58 in 99/00 and 57 in 00/01. Quite an achievement IF we finished not that far behind that, given how (rightly) we all hold those two Reid teams in such high regard.
Funnily enough, we were in a similar situation with Chelsea (as regards competing with them for a European place on the final day) in 2000/01. Going into the last game, we were on 56 points, Chelsea 58. So if we won and they lost, we would leapfrog them. As it turned out, we drew at Goodison and they beat Man City at Maine Road, so we finished 7th (again), 4 points adrift and Chelsea took the UEFA Cup place in 6th. Hopefully things work out differently this time

And if you read any of the match threads they're full of tactical geniuses slagging him off for things like starting the wrong XI, making subs at the wrong time (or the wrong subs), putting players in the wrong position etc etc etc
Imagine how many points we'd have garnered if he'd got things right ;)
