Points Deductions

Raymondo

Central Defender
Any pitch deemed below average will result in the home team losing ALL points gained in that match.

It’s high time something was done, but I worry they’ve gone too far the other way with this. Will probably result in even blander pitches than we have seen lately.

I still think the ‘road’ issue needs to be addressed too, a pitch that is so flat that it would take 8 days to yield a result is much worse for county cricket than one where the game is over inside two days. I think most of us would agree we’d rather be at a game that lasts two days and produced a result and a ton of excitement than one where we get early handshakes on the fourth evening following 600 plays 500 plays 380-4 or some set of high totals in a complete borefest.

As I posted on another thread, thats Somerset in Div 2 next year

Agree about the roads too. The wicket at the Oval v you lot last year was a joke- and it felt that nearly every away game, the home side just produced a strip of the M4 and chucked it down - Warwickshire were by far the worst offenders but it was clearly a tactic sides used. Leads to dull, attritional cricket that'll turn people away from the sport. The last thing we need.

What is considered “below average”?

We don’t want games finishing in two days but equally we don’t want 600 plays 500 which is just as dull as dishwater for everyone involved yet seems to go unpunished.

Agreed my idea of below average is a 500 plays 500 borefest well into day 3 before a teams second innings.

Warwickshire for example have put up some absolute shockers in recent seasons.

Aye the wicket Somerset had for us was bad last season, but at least it created more entertainment than a glorified net you get in a lot of games.

Kookaburra being turfed out means I don't think is particularly needed. As this added to the issues last season on top of flat pitch preparation/dry weather in 2025.

I agree .To have an average some must be below , some above . Ridiculous system, only time you should lose points is if its an absolute minefield . While i wouldnt like to go back to uncovered wickets ,crickets cricket , game of bat AND ball. Top bats learn to survive on sub par.

One of the worst offenders iirc.

Think they were penalised for that.

Good point regarding the kookaburra.
