Just a quick question for you lads on here who play for local clubs.

My current club have a major problem with trying to get people to play for the firsts if they're from the seconds. Both teams are of equal ability, some of our second team players are better than some firsts but when we put these lads up into the firsts they refuse to play/come out with the excusses as to why they cant make it to where the firsts are playing in time.

I know lads have there mates in teams so this week we put 3 good mates into the firsts, all 3 have now dropped out and can only play for the 2nds meaning other less able players/myself who is injured having to go to cover them.

Do any other clubs have these problems? this is village cricket at the lowest of levels.

most players want to play the best level they can.....

perhaps sit everyone down and ask why people dont want to play in the 1sts

We've tried this, said they want to play with there mates, so when we move a block of them together they still drop out, So annoying, took us 45 mins to pick 2 teams which were competetive sides(the 3 all said they were available)then when they are picked and they ring and say they cant play 1 by 1. If we weren't short on players I'd suggest dropping them next week but we are struggling to get 2 teams out week after week..

Maybe they think the 1sts is taken too seriously and they don't need/want the pressure.

i generally play 2nds occasionally 3rds but if i was ever asked to play first team i wouldnt play, there is too much pressure and its taken to seriously. i want to be able to play and have a laugh, ok you dont just take the piss all the time but if there is a dropped catch you can have a little laugh and not get abuse from everyone like you would in the first team.

To be honest theres no pressuse within the firsts, our 2nds are in the bottom league of the pyramid system within the county, our firsts are the next league up, there is very little difference between the 2 leagues and because of the 3/4 lads who wont play for the firsts our 2nd team is continually stronger.
They've been continually asked to come along to selection meetings and see the hastle it is but wont turn up.

One reason is that they couldnt make it to where the firsts are playing in time, yet I've just looked and its quicker from where he is to the away game (1sts) than it is back to our ground?! :-D

In fairness I went through a period of being between firsts and seconds. When playing for the seconds I would always open the batting but might be down at 8 when playing for the firsts and sometimes didnt get a knock.

I always played for whoever i was selected for but didnt like playing for the ones if it meant batting down the order

Mate of mine many years ago got 100 each day playing Saturday and Sunday for the seconds, they put him in the firsts the following week and he batted 9 and never got a knock. He was f***ing fuming to say the least:lol:

I feel out of my depth playing for the 2nds, so they've got no chance of me playing for the firsts.

Thankfully, this won't be a problem because those playing for the firsts are infinitely better than I.

Haven't noticed a problem at our club (this season) as there seems to be a core group of 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. I'm sure people would have preference for playing in a certain team but at the same time, I don't think anyone would complain if moved.

Could just be like they playing against inferior opposition, then getting more runs or wickets etc

This is the nearest to the truth, I think.

It's likely a second teamer will get less of a game.

When stepping up to the firsts some players can't see that a useful 20 is better than an easy 50 in the seconds.

It's down to the make up of the player and what they want out of their game of cricket.

usually one of these as most stated:
1. mates being in the 2nds and not enjoying it as much whilst playing for the 1sts
2. 1st team not the most welcoming
3. being out of depth ability wise in the 1sts
4. Batting down the order. This for me puts me right off playing for the firsts batting 8,9,10 or 11 and then not bowling has no appeal to me what so ever.
5. prefer to be a big fish in a small pond mentallity

We try and use the lads in the same order if they move up but it's very difficult when the team is doing well as they all tend to move up the order if a batsman is missing. Bowlers normally get a bowl but the standard is a lot higher in the 1st as there are a lot of paid players. It's not unique it an age old problem.

Re your initial comment having seen you bowl in the 2s this season you are doing yourself a massive disservice. And while the 2s beat the 3s in pre season, is the standard of the opposition in NEDL3 noticeably better than what the thirds face in HLSL2? Not much in it IMO.

I've bowled 6 overs for 32 runs!

Spot on. The batting down the order is the big one for me, as well as the ability point; and the fact that everyone hits the ball so much harder at that level as well.

From my expirience, the reason lads don't want to play 1st is

You bat right down the order and never get a bowl, if you bowl. Your a spare part. If you have to bat to go in and get a draw and do it, its expected and your thought no better of. Oh and in general they are really CLIQUEY

And to top it of you might get to field fine leg or 3rd man both ends.

They tend to take the best players from the 2nds and then never utilise then for the reasons they have been promoted to the first - runs or wickets taken.
