To be even MORE pedantic, he’s specifically from the South Tyrol/Südtirol (Sinner). I work for an Austrian company and two of my colleagues are Italian but are native German speakers and very much have Germanic names (like Sinner).

The Austro-Hungarian empire used to be in charge there – hence German as the majority language even today – but as part of the deal to get the Italians to come on board with the Allies in WWI, South Tyrol acted as a bargaining chip. It’s a hugely beautiful place and one of the wealthiest places in Europe.

Is this all very dull and rather besides the point? Yes. Yes, I’m sure it is.
