Picture Tribute - Memorial game Jan 1st

I going to chose not to bring a photo of my loss. It’s just the way I want to deal with it but I utterly respect those that want to do this tribute.

My dad was a very private bloke and I think I’m respecting his memory in this way.

I didn’t post anything when he died as I didn’t think he would want me to do so.

Love you dad.
Totally get this and everyone has to deal with grief and show respect in the way their heart tells them too.
My dad was very reserved too, but we’re taking a picture on Thursday as our hearts tell us it’s a way to celebrate his memory on this occasion. Having his name in the programme and on the scoreboard memorial last new year helped a lot too.
Best wishes to everyone dealing with loss, which always hits hardest at this time of year 🙏🏼

How do you go about submitting a picture and getting a name added to the list, my dad passed away 14th November be a nice touch he was a MLF

I believe it’s too late for the scoreboard. Joanne may be able to confirm for you.

In terms of a picture, you can print and take your own if you’re going to the match. I used FreePrints but the heaven branch used a local printers.
If you’re not local or able to attend and the branch can help with your picture, it will be held up in the south stand during the minutes applause.

Out of curiosity why is it a minutes applause rather than silence? I feel like silence would be more suiting to this type of display. Regardless, it’ll be amazing and well done to everyone involved in organising

Didn’t even realise that, just watched the video and going by that assumed it would be a silence like always. How are people supposed to clap while holding pictures and scarfs up?

It should be a silence, it is always observed impeccably, is much more respectful and as you say much more suited to this type of display.

It’s a personal thing. Some people get more out of celebrating someone’s life in a rousing way than in quiet contemplation. I don’t think either approach shows more respect.

Memorial game 1st January

Hi I’m Joanne from The Heaven Branch, we are organising a picture tribute at this game and ask for all fans help to spread the word.

We have around 100 prints of fans, club staff and former players ready to place on seats in The Roker end with the help of This is Wearside. These are on behalf of families who can’t get to the game, We are relying on people sat in those seats to help hold them up. Each picture will have the name of the fan on the back so you know who you are holding up. If you find one on your seat and don’t wish to join in please pass it on.

Those who have their own photos just take them with you to your seat. We have fans in all areas of the ground joining in.
They can be any size, most have gone for A3, A2 and a couple have made flags.

Before kick off there will be a minute applause announced, during that applause we will hold up our pictures.

Pictures are for those who have passed in the 8 years since we were last in the Premier League.

Names on the scoreboard and in program are for those who have passed in the last 12 months.

We have tried our best to get the info out so no one at the game isn’t aware what we are doing. If you know anyone who this applies to please let them know.

The Heaven Branch is a group of fans supporting fellow fans when they lose a loved one

Thanks & Merry Christmas
Good work Joanne, this will give a lot of solace to people methinks

Couple of years ago they changed the date from the last game of the year to the first, and changed the minute silence to a clap.
Last year the away fans were singing the song of player that had died. Totally changed the feeling of the whole thing.
Gone from a poignant, dignified silence, to clapping and singing. Very disappointing. It was a very good and important tradition that has been taken away from us.

Is there anyway the club/press can promote this as had I not seen this thread I wouldn't have known to be honest and I think it's a fantastic thing to do.

Hiya are you in the Facebook Group? Since July we’ve been slowly printing pics for those who can’t go, I pick the last batch up on the 30 th if you’d like to get a picture to me. We wouldn’t automatically hold up every member just in case family didn’t want it ( and would cost a bomb with over 500 members now ) can you personal message on this platform ? If I can get a pic today I’ll send it to the printer and add him to the Roker end pictures to be held up
Sorry just seen this. Yes I’m on the the Facebook group and already sent a pic & paid a week back.

You’re doing amazing work Joanne, thanks for everything.
