Phillipsy

He wanted a move away, along with McCann and Sorenson, in his last year after he put in a transfer request he did very little. I appreciate what he did for us, but he was a mercenary who left for money.

This.
Then hangs out of the back of us on every game on sky.
Horrendous people wanted him as manager.

You appreciate what he did for us!! Haha. He’s probably the best sunderland player the last 40 years. He’s a genuine sunderland legend. A golden boot winner who cost us 300k rising to 500k. He’s one of the greatest signings this club ever made but you don’t like him cos he was poor his last season! Unbelievable. He could have left years before but was loyal to us

You should. You were lucky enough to see a true great in a Sunderland strip in the flesh.

I don't care why or how he left, it was always going to end but what he left us with was memories of seeing a legend in our clubs history, something generations of our fans will never see.

Well evidently the sandies support is split but the mag section constantly abused Phillipsy cos he was our player, j mean when he was on the bench. So basically he had enough.
Sheelds team lose,mags win.
Evidently?

You have no evidence and I can assure you that what you've heard is completely wrong.

Only a sandie who works with me and his lad still lives in sheelds.
However you seem to know that it is completely wrong,so what did go down then?

I was told It’s costing the owner 100k a year to keep the club running, so was told no money available and wanted SKP to take a pay cut.
I thought SKP must have another job lined up but have not seen him mentioned since he walked away.

Strange really. I am sure he could have got many a job at the level South Shields were at. With his media work and past earnings I wouldn’t have thought salary would be important in the short term. Maybe he fancied returning to the North East because of his continued celebrity there, and now maybe he has had enough of it.
I'm 59 all I can say he's the best finisher in the best team in my lifetime, absolute legend.
There was a lot more to his game than finishing though. His passing and crossing were excellent and he had a lot of assists.

SKP wasn’t brilliant in his last season but we were awful, he’d had a few niggly injuries and was having to drop deeper and deeper to get involved. My memory is that he often still played quite well whilst not influencing games much. He wanted to leave but entirely understandably in retrospect. A disappointing final season but far outweighed by those before it.

I understand that, but, he was paid to do a job, he didn't in his last year, he wanted away.
He was still one of our better players that year. Just that he was practically playing in midfield for us
The man is a legend.
A European Golden Boot Winner while wearing the stripes….highly doubtful that that will happen again any time soon.

The bile towards him by some of those on here is nothing short of a disgrace.
People saying he downed tools are a disgrace. He had to play much deeper his last season, due to us being hopeless. The bloke was class

Certainly not how I remember it. I remember he dropped deeper and deeper, developing his game and becoming a much better all round player in an attempt to make something happen. We were f***ing abject, he did his best in that mess and wanted to actually make the most of his immense talent. Anyone who blames him for that in the context of what he gave us is an absolute nugget.

Spot on mate, mental how over the years people have twisted it to how he didn't give a shit, clueless.
