These guys are professional players. The key is in the word 'professional', which connotates as 'for money'. Players are unconcerned about how or where their employing clubs obtain the money to pay their salaries for the duration of their contracts. It doesn't matter whether it is gate receipts, replica shirt sales, the club's cut of the match-day beer and burger revenue or, more likely, the TV revenue streams.

When gate receipts were the primary source of funding, stadium size was important (more people = more money) and was why, for example, Man Utd were able to attract a better class of player than say, Mansfield.
