Peter Willey

Anthly

Central Defender
Just been reading that the only person Sir Ian Botham wouldn’t mess around was north east born Peter Willey.Beefy was notorious for fooling around and playing pranks on his colleagues.
Apparently Botham was scared of Willey!!
I remember Peter Willey for that open batting stance.

Willey was hard as nails. Not a good batsman but always brought in for WI series as he had no fear of their bowlers.

Beefy wouldn't mess Brian Close about either, apparently he bounced him off the lockers at Somerset.

Front on stance:

There was a NZ opener around that time with a similar stance. Anyone remember his name?

I loved Willey's attitude, good close fielder, not scared of anything and could hang around at the crease when things were hairy as they always were against the West Indies. This piece puts his international career into some perspective, i.e. always brought in for the tougher opponents

its something they dont do anymore like, whether thats right or wrong

I am a bit perplexed by the need for test batsman to be able to play in all conditions, only the very best can.

you dont pick the same bowler in all conditions

Botham is nowt but a gobshite. Fake hardman persona, with his boring tales about punching people. Even his nickname "Beefy" gets on my nerves.
