Sunderland AFC is pleased to announce several recent developments within its performance domain.

A summer of significant investment across personnel and infrastructure includes the additions of Head of First Team Performance, Shad Forsythe, and Senior Performance Coach, Luke Cooper.

Leading an elite, multidisciplinary high-performance programme for the first team, Forsythe moves to Wearside following three years as Borussia Dortmund’s Head of Performance, which is a role he also held throughout long-term tenures with Arsenal and the German national team.

Cooper also adds significant experience, having spent four years in the EFL with Sheffield Wednesday before becoming New York City FC’s Head of Sports Science from 2020 to 2025.

In addition to a new partnership with INTRA Performance Group, Liam Howells has been appointed as the Club’s new Lead Performance Nutritionist.

The process to appoint a Performance Nutritionist is also ongoing, with Colette Miller also joining the first-team backroom staff to undertake the role of Soft-tissue Therapist.

Head of Performance & Medicine, Jamie Harley said: “Following our promotion to the Premier League, it was important to continue developing our provision across performance and medical. We are delighted by the impact our new staff have made alongside the wider team, with investment in personnel also underpinned by further developments to the environment and infrastructure at the Academy Light.”

Absolutely world-class stakeholder acquisition strategy here from the club. Love to see them doubling down on cross functional performance bandwidth and leveraging international best practice to future-proof our competitive advantage within the performance domain space.

Shad and Luke’s onboarding represents a serious upgrade to the club’s human capital portfolio, while the nutrition and soft-tissue verticals will ensure end-to-end optimisation of the athlete value chain. By aligning infrastructure, personnel, and cultural DNA into one cohesive high-performance operating model, we're showing we're here for the long term view.

Huge kudos to the leadership team for executing such a seamless talent integration roadmap, the ROI on resilience, recovery, and readiness will be exponential.

Comfortably in the top one performance domains I’ve ever read.

Looks like we’re planning long term and aiming high.

No idea what their salaries are, but it surely is a no brainier in the big picture of things to invest in this, as the total annual salary of everyone mentioned above will come in to less than one month of someone like Xhaka.

Based on that update I am looking forward to them announcing whoever they appointed as Head of Chat GPT usage

‘Our Performance Domain is bigger than yours! Our Performance Domain is bigger than yourrrrrrs!

‘It’s got a Senior Performance Coach and a Soft Tissue Therapiiiiist! Our Performance Domain is bigger than yourrrrrs!’

PS nice bit of nominative determinism in the surname of the Head of Performance & Medicine being ‘Harley’. That job’s right up his street.
