Penshaw Cricket Club?

Just been reading about the history of the NEDL and found out that one of the original members was Penshaw. I was born and brought up in Penshaw and have never heard about a cricket club and can’t even think where in the village they would have played? Sounds like it would have been 1890s and early 1900s. Tried googling but can’t find any more information on this. Anybody heard about them before?

Came across them when writing the history. Only managed to find those few bits on the early clubs sadly.

I've had a look on the 1896 map and I can't see any sign of a cricket ground in and around Penshaw, even thought Philli and Burnmoor are clearly marked.

Trying to think of a flat enough piece of ground that could have been a cricket pitch and struggling. Think the club was linked to the church so maybe somewhere like where the allotments are now or maybe down towards Cox Green

Around 1900 there was a lot more open space, plenty of fields but nowhere marked out as even playing fields. Take a look at old-maps.co.uk it's free access and maps from various years.

If you are responsible for that East Rainton website - then massive congratulations. It’s an excellent read and can’t believe I played there so many times without appreciating the rich history of the club.
Thank you, much appreciated. Knew we were an old club, just needed to do some digging.
Just read the East Rainton CC history.Cracking in depth details etc.Rather poignant that the only defeat in 1989 was away to Tantobie where a 55 from Geordie Oliver was the backbone of the home total
Thank you.
