Pembele

He looked decent positionally and defending. Got lost a bit with his passes and taking players on. Looks to have more about him than Hjelde though (not hard that).

For his short 2 minute cameo he won more balls up there than Jobe last night. He looked a lot more athletic as well, looks like he’s dropped quite a bit of weight. Keep telling myself there’s a player in there and he will burst onto the scenes next season 😂
We're crying out for a specialised coach to come in and work with them. Genuinely think Jobe could be a top end premier league striker if we mould him correctly. He's got a lot of good attributes to play as a 9.

Thought he looked decent tonight, but he still looks afraid to take his full-back on. He's got so much pace - just a hit and run would do it half the time, yet seems to shrink from taking the risk and play it inside instead.

Felt for him on those 3 occasions Rigg should have passed to him and didn't. Almost seemed like he didn't want to play it to him.

Exactly. I think one of the biggest mistakes (or perhaps naivety) was not communicating this properly when 'the 5 year plan' was originally communicated. Instead, we got 'we are Sunderland and we are not happy with the playoffs', then everyone looks at it and it doesn't match what is happening on the pitch or in the transfer windows. Had it been along the lines of 'We are going to sign young players with high potential ceilings, that may take some time to develop but will position us very well as we approach the next 2-3years, we will be in a very healthy position in terms of squad by then, while doing it sustainably. We appreciate this might take a bit more time than people want, but we feel it's the best thing for the club considering recent history', people may have been a bit more accepting and patient to go on the journey.

We are a highly passionate and therefore emotional fan base and quite rightfully so, who demand high standards, so fundamentally I think there is a misalignment currently in expectations between the club and the fan base that causes a lot of discontent.
Bang on. Even in that scenario you'd still get some who are impatient and would want to grow quicker - that's inevitable. But 70-80% of the fanbase imo would be completely on board with this and would love the fact the board are so focused on protecting the long term of the club given our recent history

The biggest problem with Speakman’s approach to the transfer window isn’t that he’s signing crap - yes granted a couple will turn out to be. But instead he’s signing players 18 months before they are ready to play consistently at this level. You can get away with it if you have a couple more experienced players to carry them at times which is our biggest area of concern but not something impossible to fix.
This is it in a nutshell really.

I don't think anyone has any objections with the approach of buying young players with potential for cheap in the hope that we can train them on. The problem is when that is solely the signings you make you end up where we are now where we don't really know how good most of our players are and totally lack any leadership or experience.

Balance is needed and we've totally missed that over the last three transfer windows.

I've watched the game back this morning and have to say he looked lost. Not sure what position he should be in when he's defending and weak going forward

Some might never be ready either, let's be honest. Pembele has something but like with Ba it's harnessing that and shaping it into a positon when you also have to improve on their weaknesses. There's no guarantee many of them will ever develop that far.

Do that enmasse whilst not addressing first team issues and it's a failure, because you won't get to the long term.

Plus if these kids dont have the right squad balance then there guaranteed to take longer to develop / possibly leave due to lack of confidence.

We've created a pressure cooker for our investments instead of a place for them to florish as quickly as possible.

Yesterday he probably got told to not go forward too much to keep our defensive shape against their attacking threat.

Thought he played well overall and would like to see him starting every game until the end of the season.

He got a little sloppy with the ball in the 2nd half but was most likely tired which is understandable. i think we have a really good player on our hands who looks to have been managed poorly.

First full proper game, relatively ad hoc back five who have never played together , away at Champions elect……..we should applaud his contribution and encourage him . He is athletic and quick… needs support on and off the pitch. He will do well.
He's f***ing shite man
That’s the spirit!
