He's a strange manager. I've many friends who are Pompey fans and at times he had them looking like world beaters and others they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. He's a bit of a character as well, likes a moan and shout! He doesn't or hasn't taken much shit over the years. Big jump in club size from Wigan and Pompey to us!

To be fair they have two major trophies more than we have in my lifetime. We shouldn't be too sniffy, these days...

That alone is a plus point. If our lot start moaning at Bain, they'll probably find he's not as soft a touch as Byrne was.

I knew Cook from being in the opposing dugout to him a few times when he managed Sligo Rovers, he's a good manager & coach but never would of suspected him for this job, he would definitely be more animated than Moyes or Grayson in the dressing room but i'm not sure if he would be the full package for us yet.

Oh aye, that's why I mentioned it. We need a tough manager who can be their mate and also f***ing put the fear of god in them!

It's what BSA did so well. Certainly players he managed by making them fearful and others he put his arm round and helped them along!

OK. I have met Paul Cook on many occasions. Here is what I know. Mostly good, but.....

I live in Chesterfield and he was manager here whilst my Son was at the Academy. He is a brute, but a great bloke, every one liked him, staff/players/the academy lads/ their parents/ the tea lady/ the press, he regularly visited the academy to watch and often train the kids even on match days! (the ONLY manager I saw there of the 5 that passed through during my Sons time in the Academy) and the players also loved him. The ones that didn't like him he got rid of, even some of the 'better' players. He believes in the basics. Keep possession, pass the ball and attack with pace- even at lowly Chesterfield played some great stuff to get them into the League 1 play offs (ironically beaten by Simon Graysons Preston). He brought through Clucas and Owain Doyle and sold them on to Premiership clubs and look at his record, it is very impressive.

However, he was also very well known 'on the town' was banned from Chesterfield only 5 star hotel, and was not renowned for his courtesy after a drink...... this would worry me but honestly. He would certainly sort the players out and take absolutely no crap from anyone. He is very aggressive during games and was regularly booked and sent off. He is also like that with players, even during games. Its funny to watch.

A well known local story about him for you;
In his first week a Senior player complained that training was too focused on short passing and in League one, it doesn't work. In front of the whole squad Cooky said to the player 'it does work, you're just shit scared of having the ball at your feet'.

I know no-one on here will want Paul Cook. But he would be a great appointment and as fans we would love him. Some players would also love him, the others would leave and would leave very quickly.

That lack of consistency is because he wants players to play his way. He goes mental at them when they dont follow his way, even during the game and that scares some players. Honestly, He would give our lot a big shake up.

I've seen his methods. He's a very particular coach. But some of the ways he's setup teams before against certain scenarios has been baffaling, more so than Moyes and Grayson for us. I really like his fight and passion though.

Manager of Wigan, used to manage Portsmouth and Chesterfield, done well wherever he has been. He does seem a bit of an outlier amongst those names and people are obviously putting money on as his odds are shortening ........

Sounds oddly familiar that

He was a cracking player in my opinion. Much underrated. I'm warming to the idea!

His odds keep shortening he is now the 4th favourite. Seems to be the 'anomaly' on the market too in the same way I thought McInnes was in the summer, the other favourites are SAFC legends/obvious names that would come up for any championship job.
16/1

There is no plunge yet in the betting, 4/1 fav karanka

I think it will be possibly 10 days at least before an appointment
