Paul Collingwood

as far as Durham goes he is the best one day player to play for the club certainly the most effective, an outstanding 3 dimensional one day player. His championship performances are a bit more moderate but his crowning glory at the club was leading that very young and talented side to the championship in 2013.
His England career is remarkable, punched way above his weight in test match cricket.

Said it before but no north east sportsman has achieved more than Paul Collingwood. HE has delivered for his home county and his country, breaking records all along the way. Shearer had the Angel of the North covered in black and white having achieved nowhere near as much in his respective sport as Paul Collingwood.

He should be a household name in the north east, where nigh on everyone should know who he is. Yet he isnt. Im going to put my foil paranoia hat and say its simply because he isnt black and white or a Tynesider.
Reality is that cricket is significantly less supported than football in the north east. And the rest of the country

I first saw him when he was 12th man for the 2nds at Shildon in 1994 and to rise from there to World Cup winning captain, scoring a double century in Australia, pulling off jaw dropping pieces of fielding, leading Durham to a CC title and One Day Cup and always giving 110% speaks volumes for the cricketer Paul Collingwood is.

I only wish some of our so called footballers at the SOL over the same period had displayed a fraction of his dedication and loyalty.

I know it's difficult for a lot of lads on here to get to the games during the week but let's see how many we can get to the Middlesex game to give him the send off he deserves.

Cheers Colly lad!

Paul Collingwood..... Where to start really.

County Durham lad, Durham for 23 years, world cup winning captain, won the ashes 3 times.......... many other things
A superb ambassador for County Durham and Durham County Cricket Club.

The one day cup final in 2014 at Lords is a day I'll never forget, likewise
The 2013 championship winning day, unreal day and celebrations late into the night at the ground. 2 of my finest days watching sport and he played major parts in making those days happen.

We won't see anyone like him again at Durham. He should be very proud.

End of an era.

Good luck

Not to mention a Test 200, not many good Test players have one of them, but this one was against Australia at Adelaide. The first 200 by an Englishman in Australia for god knows how long - and he went to the 200 with a 6!

Having a discussion tonight, and we were thinking that collingwood shows the importance of Durham getting first class status. Because he is not flamboyant I think he would have been ignored by counties like many other local greats of the past such as Wilkinson, Birtwisle,Riddell, Lander , Pierson, and therefore never have got that international chance

I think though tbf although them players were very good especially Stuart Wilkinson( probably the fastest amateur bowler seen in this area) Collingwood was a lot higher standard than the rest of them.

So although I take your point, very much think he would have been picked up by other counties even if Durham did not have first class status, as he was a class above!
