This place is all about opinions, though, surely? What's the point of it otherwise?
And many players reach their potential in the championship - plenty of players in teams that dominate the championship that are never good enough as PL regulars. Because the division below was their potential maxed out.
And on your last point, there are folk on here who fall into both camps, the happy medium as ever, is somewhere between the two. But I would agree with @burchmackem on one thing - it is f***ing tedious when we lose a game and suddenly someone is a "shite" player, if they had an off day. To be specific here, Patto is a good keeper imho. He's not Pickford by any means, but he's saved us more than he's cost us and he's in no way "shite" because he made a couple of errors on the weekend. If that first one hadn't hit Ballards' legs, it'd be down as one of the saves of the season ffs.

A few years ago i had the misfortune to soend an hour in the company of Alex Neil and his assistant. They both said Patterson had loads of potential but was extremely shy and quiet and they were trying to work on that so he would be more vocal during games. Looks like he still has the same issue from what I’ve seen last few games
 
Manchester United are chasing Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson as they look for a new number two.

The Reds are in the market for a young shot stopper to understudy Andre Onana and Patterson is firmly in their sights.

Former keeper Tony Coton, now United's keeper scout, is checking out Patterson as he fits the bill in every way.

Coach Erik ten Hag is firmly behind Onana as his first choice, but Turkish reserve Altay Bayindir has hardly had a chance to impress and may move.

Ten Hag is keen to have competition for Onana from a keeper who is good enough to come in but would also settle for being on the bench much of the time.

Patterson has been linked with several moves in the past but is yet to get the Premier League call and he may have to settle for being a reserve at a top club initially.

Crystal Palace have also taken a big interest in Patterson but all they can offer is a reserve role behind Dean Henderson.

Liverpool are short-listing Patterson too ahead of a possible exit for Republic of Ireland cap Caoimhin Kelleher. But it would be for cover again.

Sunderland price Patterson at around £20 million but may take less. They will not want to lose him this season as they chase promotion, so a summer switch could be more likely.

I think Patterson is an average championship keeper, no more, no less. He could go on to become an excellent player but I’ve seen nothing yet to describe him as outstanding.

If we’re looking to sell one asset per summer and could get big money for Patterson I’d be taking the money.

From what I’ve seen of his replacements they fill me with sheer dread we definitely need better to replace him

1st choice in future is just sitting on the bench at Salford currently

Young seems a real prospect which makes any potential sale of Patterson even more palatable. We could bring in an experienced championship keeper for a fraction of the fee being allegedly touted for Patterson
