It’s true that it’s just a changed social convention with no obvious purpose. The father is superfluous to requirements at this stage of the procedure either way (and I would be fascinated to know whether the mother, if she could be allowed to be completely honest, genuinely prefers the current approach or not). But I wouldn’t have thought Butcher is old enough to have been of the generation where absence would have been the norm. I’m a decade older than he is and it was already changing back then. So it’s quite odd that he’s commenting the way he is. Probably just trying to be controversial for click bait.
